# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Green Lane? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Green Lane and the remainder of Lancashire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Contact us before anything else happens, and you'll hear what follows next.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car. Fired up regardless? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It's not fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those components.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Green Lane, anywhere — an odd place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.

- Our van turning up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning BB2 4, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you call.

- Three replies settle the whole job: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A rushed refuel on the road in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood outside Cherry Tree for three hours. Phone then leave the vehicle where it is. What is key is the run in, because diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates the pump and the injectors, whereas petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles ran your pump on a fluid drained of most of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the request to leave your keys alone till our engineers get there.

## On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where this job often begins, and where a good chunk of it finishes.

The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at EG On the Move? Given the owner's consent, that's a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

Nowhere else other than a garage can it be halted with the motor still unstarted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys.

The attendants will usually happily push the car out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing.

Starting the car just to move four car lengths isn't.

Diesel Renault Clio. A couple of litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Spar. That's the call our technicians want, since the point underneath it's about quantity through the pump not hours on the clock.

## Coverage near Green Lane

As a residential suburb, Green Lane gets a regular call, while the villages close by come with it on that same round: Waterloo and Feniscliffe, Cherry Tree and Mill Hill, Moorgate.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of places around Lancashire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Contact us and check instead of guessing — county lines above all, and wherever a satnav may misread.

That map shows the patch the page spans.

Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

## Kerbside stops in Green Lane

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable.

A common call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge of Railton Avenue or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Out of the car when it isn't safe to be inside, with it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We'll send the van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than driving on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

under 3 miles from Green Lane, the M65 is what matters now.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Cockridge Wood, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## A bit about Green Lane

Green Lane is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 124 metres, and is located near the city of Preston. Green Lane has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant, and is close to nearby places such as Waterloo and Feniscliffe. Green Lane is part of the wider North West region, and is approximately 183 miles from London.

## What happens when our engineers get to you in Green Lane

- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.

- Out flows the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- Once it is turned on, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds onward with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Peugeot 3008 near Greenfield Communoty Centre.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Green Lane is a different problem

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — do not start the vehicle — but this problem isn't.

Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Green Lane page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not slapdash — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi A3, a fill-up close to St John Vianney that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Green Lane

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page frankly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range.

If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Green Lane drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Green Lane. Can you drain it on the spot?

A good part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

It's fixable a lot more often than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
