# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Greenland?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Greenland and the rest of South Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not run and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

One call our way is plenty: we shall show you what happens from here. Do this right away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Don't crank it. Started all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Leave the ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Clipstone Gardens, anywhere — a tricky location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.

- Have your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode that starts S9 5 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.

- Three answers shape your whole visit: the stuff you poured in, the approximate measure of it, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A good portion of this job is done at a pump, because that's where it mostly begins.

Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

A filling station is the single setting this is spotted before your motor has started.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Very much worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Parts our vans cover near Greenland

Attercliffe Hill Top, Darnall, Attercliffe, Carbrook, Handsworth Hill — every one of those on the rounds that take us over to Greenland as well, a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations across South Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing about if we come.

On a boundary, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Call us to check rather than presuming.

Check this map for the patch shown here.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

## Kerbside stops around Greenland

Some people have no safe spot to pull over at all.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Calvert Road because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Safe there? Sit with it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it.

Don't restart your motor to limp the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the system.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to an inconvenient place, and that's no problem for us.

Three replies settle much of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to your car in the car park at Noose and Gibbet Inn. After that the polluted mix comes out of your tank, the lines are flushed, and where your Ford Focus has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When new diesel is in and your system bled, our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly before you pull away.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M1 comes into it — under 3 miles from Greenland.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition.

Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That is the full process, and it explains the normal Phillimore Park call: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

## All about Greenland

Greenland is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated on the riverside near Sheffield. Greenland has a relatively low elevation of 56 metres and is located close to nearby places such as Attercliffe Hill Top and Darnall. Greenland is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is approximately 2.4 miles from Sheffield city centre.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you around Greenland

- The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- The tank is drained completely.

- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our technicians start it and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Hardly ever the trouble, the spot. On-street is the usual spot our engineers work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near St Alban, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Peugeot 2008 gets emptied, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the full circuit — because by now the worst of that is in the lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Greenland is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the problem under it's a distinct one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Greenland has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some contracts demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel Renault Captur by Darnall Road Baptist. You will not know how full the tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on site all the same. Our engineers ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Greenland

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What shifts it:

- This is the big one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and the diesel Dacia Sandero is parked up by Markazi Jamia. The engine isn't giving up — that deadness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours normally get driven a second time before somebody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Greenland

## At a petrol station in Greenland, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

The pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and the car, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout South Yorkshire and around Greenland: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
