# Greenside: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Greenside and the rest of Tyne and Wear. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Phone and then our team shall show you what follows after that before you attempt much else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for several miles. Motorists get that muddled. It is not okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition be.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather travel to an awkward place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Lead Road, put the hazards on then keep it there.

- Our van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode starting NE40 4, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you phone.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has started. These three facts shape the entire job.

Don't take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Golf outside Wylam whilst the work goes on, and we would far rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel at the forecourt?

The work kicks off at a forecourt, typically. Frequently the work ends on site as well.

If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where the drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

The forecourt is the only setting it is caught before the engine has started.

We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.

The staff will generally help you roll the car clear of the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

We'll come out to you, empty that tank, flush the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Skoda Octavia in Greenside and you're stuck at Greenside Local with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us — and do not fire it up again to get out of the bay. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls little fuel, which is why these tend to be the straightforward jobs.

## Parts our vans reach around Greenside

Low Greenside, Folly, Ryton Woodside, Crawcrook, Coalburns — every one of these on our journeys that take us out to Greenside as well, a rural village.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all towns across Tyne and Wear, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours.

Guessing is the thing to avoid, particularly on the border or somewhere a satnav struggles. Call us to enquire.

This map shows the area this page includes.

All of it is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.

Your diesel Mercedes C-Class will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from Greenside Primary School. They always do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it usually won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing warns you, as from behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about. Call us with roughly how far you went and how hard you pushed it; the second answer counts more than the first.

## Greenside: stranded where you pulled up

Not everybody has a decent spot to pull in.

A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Spen Lane or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Out of the car when it isn't sensible to wait in it, by it if it is.

Don't restart the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system.

Our van heading to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it's much better for your car than driving on.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Your Central Motorway East is the one that matters here, and runs under 10 miles from Greenside.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit and turn off.

Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Greenside Millennium Green in that diesel BMW 5 Series is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.

## All about Greenside

Greenside is a village in Tyne and Wear, situated inland at an elevation of around 152 metres, approximately 7 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Greenside has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Greenside is close to nearby places such as Low Greenside, Folly, and Ryton Woodside, and is about 248 miles north of London.

## What happens when we get to you around Greenside

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- Your tank gets emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Greenside AdBlue removal is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — don't fire it up — but this fault isn't.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Greenside has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

## Greenside costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

What takes place next is the trouble. Your engine straight away pulls the petrol left sitting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put fresh diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that tip is half right, since do it to a diesel Audi Q3 parked up, Greenside Community Centre say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take your filter off where the car has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the car merely starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Greenside drivers

## I'm on a forecourt around Greenside. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like JET is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable much more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Standing next to it?

That engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists expect.

Clearing misfuelled vehicles, Greenside and the rest of Tyne and Wear, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
