# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Grey Legs?

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Grey Legs or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Our technicians will show you what the following part is. Call us — this comes ahead of anything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Don't crank it — and don't believe it if it fires up. That is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just cannot run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: flicking it on is often all it takes to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.

- Never weaken it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Pools Brook Park, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning HU7 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has been run. Those responses decide everything that happens next.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the road in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by that point the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been left at Cottingham for three hours. Ring us then leave the car precisely where it stands. The run in is the part that is key most, as diesel has two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with the pump working on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how far you went, not how long your vehicle has been standing.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

The work begins at a forecourt, mostly. Often enough the work wraps up at one too.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, so if you are still at Asda that is usually where the drain takes place.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the one setting it ends up spotted.

We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Well worth doing.

Cranking it to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Each start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mix out of your tank and towards the pump — which is why a motor shuffled twice into a roomier bay has quietly grown into a worse job than one left just where it stopped. So if our technicians cannot work next to the diesel Audi A4, we move the car without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Lidl our technicians visit frequently, and your fuel is rarely the complicated part: the bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height limit at the entrance deciding whether our van can reach you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way your car faces.

## Grey Legs plus the areas near it

Grey Legs is a residential suburb, so we head out to it and to anywhere around it on those same journeys: Kingswood, Midmeredales, Dunswell, West Carr and Bransholme.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around East Riding of Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Close to the boundary, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and ask rather than guessing.

That map is the area the page spans.

All of it is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.

## Broken down at the kerbside near Grey Legs

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in somewhere sensible.

A common call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge beside Knightley Way or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Stay with the vehicle if it's safe to be in it, but out of the vehicle when it is not.

Never start up your engine to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the system.

Carrying on causes the car far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult location, and that's no bother for us.

Three replies decide much of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach your car in the car park outside Rising Sun. After that the contaminated blend comes out of the tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your BMW 5 Series has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and the system primed, our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before you drive away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M62 comes in, under 15 miles out of Grey Legs.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and never restart the vehicle to reposition.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in our van.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Mercedes A-Class did on the way to Ings Plantation, none of it is going on now. Nothing gets worse whilst it stands. Take your time over this — but never drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## Where's Grey Legs?

Grey Legs is a suburban area located on the riverside in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a low elevation of around 2 metres. Grey Legs sits near the city of Kingston upon Hull, approximately 3.7 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Kingswood and Dunswell. Grey Legs has a population of around 4989 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

## What our engineers do when our technicians arrive with you around Grey Legs

- The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.

- We clear the tank of all the tainted fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- We start the car and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Grey Legs is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the problem underneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Grey Legs page. Both are ours to deal with.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, a lumpy idle, rattling: that is a misfuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong. Do not start the vehicle to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, near TK Maxx or anywhere else.

## Grey Legs costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank can hold.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

## Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Grey Legs

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Grey Legs?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers work at BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable much more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't switch the car back on.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

Throughout East Riding of Yorkshire and in Grey Legs: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
