# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Groby? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Groby and the rest of Leicestershire. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

Call us and then our team shall explain what follows after that before you attempt any more.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you don't crank it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Turning the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.

- Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we would sooner get to a tricky location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Newtown Linford Lane, put those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- The van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning LE6 0, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- What was put in, roughly how much, plus whether the car has run — those three answers determine the full job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning run working on a fuel that had lost much of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked sitting at Leicester till you realise close to eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a lot, which is why the thing we ask you is about miles not hours. Phone. Leave the car precisely where it sits.

## Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

Most of the work begins at the pump, so a fair part of it is finished on site.

The drain normally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the only location this is caught.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key.

Staff will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Take the offer.

Rolling it four bays does not warrant starting the engine.

## Places our team cover around Groby

The same rounds take us to Ratby, Glenfield, Newtown Linford, Anstey and Bondman Hays as well as Groby, which is a village.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and most places across Leicestershire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Ring us and check instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever the satnav can get wrong.

This map marks the patch this page includes.

All of it is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Elizabeth Woodville Primary School, running late, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, ring us. Three miles in your BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a frantic morning drive demands plenty.

## Groby: broken down wherever you parked

Not everybody has a chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge of The Rookery, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Out of the vehicle if it is not wise to be there, by it when it is.

Don't restart it to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system.

A technician heading to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for your car than driving on.

## Run it already? Stop, and see this

The M1 is the one that counts here, and sits under a mile from Groby.

A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are normally a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to move it.

It alters what we bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle sits, since a diesel Audi A3 parked outside Flaxfield Amenity Area is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## A bit about Groby

Groby is a village in Leicestershire, situated on the banks of the River Soar, with a mix of rural and suburban characteristics. Groby has a relatively low elevation of around 95 metres and is located near several other villages, including Ratby, Glenfield, and Newtown Linford. Groby remains a predominantly residential area with a high proportion of detached housing, close to the city of Leicester but maintaining its own identity.

## What our technicians do when our technicians get to you in Groby

- The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.

- Our engineers clear the tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- When it's started, we make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off.

We do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Why so firm about leaving the keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of your injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off onward with the fuel. Phone us. Leave the Vauxhall Astra near Groby Library.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Groby

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this problem under it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue in its place.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Groby page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Groby

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

No warning light exists for this, which is why motors in that position generally get driven a second time before anyone phones. Don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel Kia Sportage is now resting close to St Philip and St James. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than a motor failing. Turn off. Call us.

## Groby motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Groby petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this takes place.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's salvageable far more regularly than motorists expect, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining around Groby and throughout Leicestershire.
