# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Guys Marsh?

Never start the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Guys Marsh and the rest of Dorset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Call us and then our technicians shall show you what comes next before you attempt anything else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and don't believe it when it starts. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just cannot run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It is not okay. It's wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off also — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.

- Never pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it only gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Denham Drive, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never moved.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting SP7 0, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- What went in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the engine has run — those three replies determine the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has forced real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return leg would more or less double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at Gillingham (Dorset) perfectly safely. Phone from the platform if easier; standing over us while we work isn't necessary.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel on the forecourt?

It starts at a pump, generally. Regularly the work ends at one as well.

If you are still on the forecourt at Murco, that is normally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

Nowhere but a garage can the mistake be stopped with your engine still unrun.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the help.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Petrol in your Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Tesco, somewhere in Guys Marsh? Then phone, and leave the motor out of it — not even to leave that bay. Somebody heads your way. Tank drained, fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws very little, and so these tend to be the easy ones.

## Guys Marsh and the areas near it

These same runs bring us to Kit Hill, Alcester, Twyford, Hartgrove and St James along with Guys Marsh, which is a rural village.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places in Dorset, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours.

Call us to check instead of guessing, particularly if you are on a boundary or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

The map is the ground the page covers.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs your vehicle to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both ready. The Skoda Octavia will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from The Abbey CofE VA Primary School, Shaftesbury — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol car mostly won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, as behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

## Stopped by the kerb anywhere around Guys Marsh?

Not everyone has the chance to stop anywhere suitable.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge on B3091 or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Remain by your car if it's safe to sit inside, and clear of the car if it isn't.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician driving out to a difficult location, and that's no problem for us.

Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we get to your car in the car park at the pub in the village. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Ford Focus has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and your system bled, our technicians start it and check it runs correctly before you set off.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 50 miles out of Guys Marsh, the M27 is what matters here.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction and switch off.

It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

None of it is the engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Guys Marsh Sports Field call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision parts it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## Guys Marsh itself

Guys Marsh is a small village in Dorset, situated inland at an elevation of around 98 metres. Guys Marsh lies near the villages of Alcester and Twyford, and is close to Kit Hill. Guys Marsh has a population of approximately 520 people, predominantly living in terraced housing.

## The call-out in Guys Marsh, step by step

- Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- The polluted fuel comes from that tank.

- What is left in your system should not be what started the trouble, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- We fire it up and make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Guys Marsh?

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Guys Marsh page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Guys Marsh

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank holds.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Guys Marsh

## I'm on a forecourt in Guys Marsh. Can you drain it here?

A large part of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's permission our technicians attend Tesco and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more frequently than drivers assume.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with your car?

Never switch the car on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more often than people fear, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Guys Marsh and across Dorset.
