# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hakin? Don't Start It

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Hakin and the remainder of Pembrokeshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Our technicians can tell you what your next step is. Phone — this happens before all else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Don't crank it — and don't trust it if it runs. This is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel normally just won't run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It's not okay. It is wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Upper Hill Street? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky place works for us better than a started engine.

- Keep your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode that starts SA73 3 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and our van circling.

- Three replies decide the entire call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark measure involved, and if it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would about double the figure to no end. The Renault Megane can stay at Milford Haven perfectly happily. Ring from the platform if easier; standing over us while our technicians work isn't needed.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

A good part of the job gets completed at a pump, as that's where it mostly kicks off.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at Tesco that is normally where the drain gets done.

A forecourt is the one spot it is caught before your motor has fired.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where your car stands.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the help.

Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

The phone call our engineers hope for sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off outside Tesco. What we're actually asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Parts we reach near Hakin

Hakin is a residential suburb, so we go out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual rounds: Hubberston, Milford Haven, Liddeston, Pill and Priory.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in Pembrokeshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing about whether our technicians come.

Presuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the border or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Phone and enquire.

Look at our map for the patch shown here.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we serve, and none of it requires your vehicle to travel to us.

Put diesel in a petrol car and generally it will not run, and so the person stops there and the wear stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That's the catch, and it is why the diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt entirely usual coming back from the local primary school. They all do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about, and so nothing tells you. Call us with roughly how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Stuck by the kerbside near Hakin

Not everyone finds a safe place to stop.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of The Rope Walk since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Whether you sit by the vehicle or step clear of it rests on whether staying nearby seems wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However tricky the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 50 miles from Hakin, the M4 is what matters now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Do not restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit and switch off.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

## Hakin itself

Hakin is a coastal suburban area in Pembrokeshire, situated near the town of Milford Haven and the village of Hubberston. Hakin sits at an elevation of 34 metres, overlooking the Milford Haven waterway, and is located approximately 14.9 miles from the city of St Davids. Hakin has a population of around 4061 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## What our technicians do when our engineers reach you in Hakin

- Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- Out goes the polluted mixture.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleaned.

- Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and bleed your system.

- Our technicians start it and make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Because the pump is ahead of your injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it gives off downstream with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Audi A3 close to Milford Haven Library and Information Centre.

## Hakin AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Hakin has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres resting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost nobody knows how full the tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Citroen C3 close to Milford Haven Museum.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Hakin

What moves the price is laid out below, since the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Hakin

## At a petrol station in Hakin, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's permission our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the car off.

Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Waiting next to it?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car remain that way.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
