# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hale? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Hale and the remainder of Cheshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

We shall explain what the next part will be. Ring us — this comes ahead of all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And once started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- We'd sooner drive to an odd location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on The Green, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Get your position prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning L24 4 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how many litres, and also if the car has run. These three facts settle the full call-out.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Forecourts are where this job often begins, and where a large part of that closes.

Still at Morrisons? Then that is normally where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the one location this ends up halted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.

The staff will usually happily move the car away from the pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Co-op Food now. Time gone by is not the thing we need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

## Hale plus the areas near it

Hale Bank, Oglet, Weston Point, Westfield, West Bank Dock Estate — all of them on our trips that bring us out to Hale as well, a coastal village.

Our technicians do come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns across Cheshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Ring us to ask instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever your phone might get wrong.

The area the page spans appears on this map.

The lot is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring your vehicle anywhere.

Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from Hale Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump works without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Hale: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull over.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge of High Street, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Wait beside your car when it is sensible to sit there, but clear of the car if it is not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky location, and that's no bother for us.

It will fire up. It will pull away perfectly well. That is the problem, since a diesel on a thinned tank runs typically while grinding the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't chance the journey home from Childe of Hale — leave the Mercedes E-Class then ring us.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then see below

Here is where your M56 comes into it — under 5 miles away from Hale.

Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It affects what we bring.

## Where's Hale?

Hale is a small village on the north bank of the Mersey Estuary in Cheshire, with a population of around 1502 people. Hale sits at a low elevation of 19 metres, close to the coast and near the cities of Liverpool and Chester. Hale is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is situated near other small communities such as Hale Bank and Oglet. Hale is located within commuting distance of Liverpool, which is about 9 miles away.

## What comes next when our technicians get to you around Hale

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers alter what the work actually is.

- The tainted fuel is drawn out of your tank.

- We clean the fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's left in the system is not what created the problem.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- It is fired up with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running properly.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Audi A6 left by Hale War Memorial scarcely two streets on. Phone us, and leave the vehicle off. A short distance does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

## A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hale

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas the fault beneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Hale page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a lumpy idle, rattling: that's a misfuelled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what is wrong. Do not start the vehicle to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, close to Hale Village Hall or anywhere else.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Hale?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Hale drivers

## Fuel drains on a Hale petrol station forecourt

A large part of this work happens there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix pulled through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the car off.

Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people fear.

Draining wrongly fuelled vehicles, Hale and the rest of Cheshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
