# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ham? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Ham and the remainder of Devon. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Our engineers can tell you what your next stage will be. Phone — it goes before anything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Never fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Switching the car's ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition be.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so don't put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ham Green Lane, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.

- A van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts PL2 2, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you call.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, roughly how much, and whether your car has been started. Those responses shape everything that comes after.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

Much of this work begins at a forecourt, so a big share of that ends up finished on site.

Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at Esso that's typically where this drain takes place.

No place except a garage can the mistake be caught with your engine still cold.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers deal with it where your car stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Well worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

The awkward part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height bar on the way in that settles whether a van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Lidl, mention how much space there is round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our engineers visit frequently. Should there be no room to work alongside the diesel Mercedes C-Class, it gets rolled with the motor off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that mixture leaves your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have quietly made a bigger job of what was merely a motor standing still.

## Areas our team serve in Ham

The same rounds take us to North Prospect, Pennycross, Camels Head, Weston Mill and Ford besides Ham, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Devon, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Phone and ask rather than presuming, above all where you are on a border or anywhere a satnav misreads.

This map shows the ground this page spans.

All of it is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

A passer-by will advise you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A misfilled diesel BMW 5 Series on the zig-zags by Mayflower Academy is an inconvenience; the same car restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the lines and drags more petrol through the fuel filter and into the pump. Leave it, let people complain, then give us a call.

## Roadside stops around Ham

Not everybody has the chance to stop somewhere sensible.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Ham Drive since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Out of the car if it is not safe to wait in it, by it if it is.

Never start it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the fuel system.

We'll send the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than driving on.

The parts that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Risk the journey home from Beacon Park Social Club? No. Phone us and leave the Citroen C3 where it sits.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the M5 counts, under 50 miles away from Ham.

A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Come off at the next safe junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the run to Ham Woods Local Nature Reserve, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile your diesel Kia Sportage covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, ring us.

## A bit about Ham

Ham is a suburban area in Devon, situated on the coast near Plymouth, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Ham sits at an elevation of 54 metres, looking out over the sea, and is close to nearby places such as North Prospect and Pennycross. Ham is part of the larger Plymouth urban area, but retains a distinct local character. Ham has a population of around 7502 people, living in a variety of semi-detached homes.

## The visit in Ham, step by step

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- The tainted fuel is drawn from the tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that started the problem.

- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- After it's started, our engineers make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

## Ham AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the problem under it is a different one altogether.

Petrol thins the diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Ham has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Ham

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and your diesel Audi Q3 is parked up close to Holy Family. The engine is not packing up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours generally get driven a second time before anybody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, and ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions around Ham

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Ham?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Gulf is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate fault. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.
