# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hampstead Heath? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Hampstead Heath or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Contact us before everything else starts, and you will know what comes from there.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Don't fire it up — and don't rely on it if it starts. That is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives away just fine for several miles. It is not fine. It is wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Switching the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd sooner get to a difficult place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Wildwood Rise, turn your hazards on and leave it there.

- Before you dial, have your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts NW11 6 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.

- What got in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has fired — those three details determine your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a fast top-up on the road in, and you realise around eleven — by that point the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan has been sitting at the nearest station for three hours. Call us then leave the car precisely where it is. The run in is the thing that counts now, because diesel has two tasks on its way through the engine: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were driven with your pump labouring on a fuel that had shed a lot of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question we ask is how far you went, not how long the motor has been parked.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where this work usually kicks off, and where a good part of that ends.

The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Gulf? Given the station's permission, that is somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

At a garage, it gets stopped with the motor never fired, and nowhere else does it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key.

Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting it for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

## Hampstead Heath and the towns beside it

Hampstead Heath is a residential suburb, so our vans are out to the town and to the areas around it on the usual runs: North End, Vale of Health, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Hampstead and Childs Hill.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of places across Greater London have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

On the boundary, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Call us to check instead of presuming.

See our map for the area included on this page.

All of it is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move your vehicle anywhere.

## Stuck on the roadside near Hampstead Heath

The chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

A common call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge beside Wildwood Road or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you stay with your car or step clear of it rests on if sitting in it looks wise.

Don't start up your motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into your fuel system.

However inconvenient the location, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local M1 is the one which counts here, and it runs under 3 miles from Hampstead Heath.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the precision components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Peugeot 3008 drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that run to Turner's Wood went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.

## About Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is a suburban area in north London, situated on the banks of the River Thames and overlooking the city. Hampstead Heath sits at an elevation of 112 metres, providing a vantage point over the surrounding landscape. Hampstead Heath is characterised by its predominantly flat housing stock, with many residents enjoying views of the London skyline. Hampstead Heath is close to nearby places such as North End and the Vale of Health, and is a short distance from Westminster and the centre of London.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you around Hampstead Heath

- The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- The contaminated fuel comes out of the tank.

- We flush the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what's left in the system isn't what created the issue.

- The system gets primed, on new diesel.

- When it's fired up, our technicians check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to set off.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Leave the Mercedes E-Class near Thomas Smith Tait and call us. We're blunt about not driving on as a worn pump gives off, and what it loses moves onward with your fuel to the injectors further along.

## Hampstead Heath AdBlue removal is a different job

Never crank it: that first instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Hampstead Heath has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We cover both.

Unfamiliar locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than careless: the narrower petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up by Sir Raymond Unwin without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage is what settles how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Hampstead Heath

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Where the car is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in your filter, the lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that got near Ralph Richardson needs your circuit purged, not drained.

## Hampstead Heath motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Hampstead Heath petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good portion of this work happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

What decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

It's recoverable much more often than people assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

The pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
