# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Harlington?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Harlington and the rest of South Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the motor has not yet run and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Ring us before all else happens, and you'll see what comes next.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the car — and never depend on it when it starts. That is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It is grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Flicking the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.

- Don't thin it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, and we would much rather come to an awkward location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Church Lane, put the hazards on then leave the car there.

- The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning DN5 7, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you ring.

- Three answers settle the full job: the fuel you poured in, the rough amount of it, plus if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

Plenty of the work starts at a pump, so a fair portion of that gets done there.

We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at JET that's generally where this drain gets done.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the only setting the mistake is spotted.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Take the assistance.

Cranking the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Diesel Audi A3. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Asda. That's the phone call our engineers hope for, because the real question beneath it is about amount through the pump rather than hours on the clock.

## Will our technicians cover your end of Harlington?

Being a village, Harlington gets a routine visit, whilst its neighbours round about come with it on that same trip: Barnburgh and Adwick upon Dearne, Windhill and Bolton upon Dearne, Dolcliffe Common.

There are pages for the majority of towns across South Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

On the border, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Ring us to enquire instead of presuming.

The map marks the ground the page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory we cover, and none of it asks the vehicle to travel to us.

## Stranded on the roadside anywhere around Harlington?

Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere safe.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge of Manor Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the motor if it is not wise to wait there, beside it when it is.

Never restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system.

We will send the van to an awkward location without any bother, and for your car that's much better than carrying on.

Three replies settle much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we reach your car in the car park outside Harlington Inn. Next the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Mercedes A-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and your system primed, our engineers start it and make sure it runs properly before you pull away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your A1(M) comes into it — under 5 miles from Harlington.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car waits, because a diesel Citroen C3 parked at RSPB Adwick Washland is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## Where's Harlington?

Harlington is a small village in South Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 21 metres. Harlington lies near several other villages, including Barnburgh and Adwick upon Dearne, and is close to the town of Doncaster. Harlington has a population of approximately 897 people, with a predominance of detached housing. Harlington is located about 147 miles north of London, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

## What we do when our engineers arrive with you in Harlington

- The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.

- Out comes the contaminated mixture.

- Our engineers purge the lines and clean the filter, and so what is left in your system is not what caused the problem.

- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- The engine is fired up and tested to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel Ford Fiesta up near Barnchurch Colliery a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us and leave it off. The short drive genuinely assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has reached the filter and the pump — which is why we purge your lines instead of only draining the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Harlington?

The issue is not the same, though the opening rule is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits instead.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Harlington has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Harlington?

One price would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

By this point the tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Renault Captur that got near Barnburgh Village Hall needs the system flushed, not cleared.

## Things we get about petrol in diesel around Harlington

## I'm on a forecourt in Harlington. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians visit Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the vehicle?

Keep it switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it stay that way.

This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers assume, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.

Throughout South Yorkshire and in Harlington: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
