# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hartley? Don't Start It

With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Hartley and the rest of Devon, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Call us and then our engineers shall show you what comes after that before you do any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- As you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. This is why you never fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel burns, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off too: turning it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Mannamead Road? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started motor.

- Have your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode beginning PL3 5 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and our van circling.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and also if the engine has run — the three replies settle the whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight. A rushed refuel on the way in. Close to eleven it hits you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Plymouth for three hours. Call us and leave the vehicle where it stands. What counts is the drive in, since diesel both combusts and — before that — protects the pump and the injectors, but petrol only ever ignites. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a liquid robbed of much of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about mileage instead of hours sitting, and hence the request to leave your keys alone till our technicians arrive.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

Plenty of this job starts at a pump, meaning a big part of that is done there.

If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is generally where this drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

Before the motor has started — a forecourt is the only setting the mistake gets caught.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the offer.

Cranking it just for four car lengths? Never.

Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Morrisons, somewhere in Hartley? Then call us, and leave the engine out of that — not even to leave the space. Someone gets to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws little, so these tend to be the simple ones.

## Coverage near Hartley

Hartley is a residential suburb, so we head out to the town and to the areas near it on those same trips: Hartley Vale, Peverell, Mannamead, Higher Compton and Lower Compton.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most towns across Devon have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

On the boundary, or somewhere a satnav struggles with? Phone and check rather than guessing.

See our map for the ground shown here.

We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle never needs to travel to us.

## Hartley: stuck where you stopped

Not everybody gets a chance to pull over anywhere safe.

A normal call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge of Bainbridge Avenue or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Stay by the motor while it's sensible to be in it, but out of the vehicle when it is not.

Never fire it up to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into your fuel system.

A technician driving to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for your car than driving on.

The parts that should be getting protected are wearing instead, and the car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank fires up and moves off quite happily. Try the drive home from The Golden Hind? Not a chance. Phone us and leave the Mercedes E-Class where it stands.

## Run it already? Pull in, and see below

under 50 miles out of Hartley, your M5 is what matters here.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Do not start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit then turn off.

It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car stands, as a diesel Audi A3 left outside Hill Lane Juniors Tennis Club is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## Where is Hartley?

Hartley is a suburban area located on the coast of Devon, sitting approximately 98 metres above sea level and just 1.8 miles from Plymouth. Hartley is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is situated near other residential areas such as Hartley Vale, Peverell, and Mannamead. Hartley is home to around 5805 residents and is part of the larger Plymouth urban area. Hartley benefits from its proximity to the city while maintaining a distinct local identity.

## Once our technicians get to you in Hartley: what follows

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.

- Our engineers clear the tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- We pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Our engineers start the car and check it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Hartley?

The problem is not the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Hartley has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

## Hartley prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely reach your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Purged, not emptied — that is what a diesel Ford Kuga which got as far as St Edward's Hall needs. Running a diesel puts the mix into the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, and so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Hartley motorists

## Fuel drains on a Hartley petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

It is fixable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists expect.

Across Devon and around Hartley: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
