# Havant: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has stopped in Havant or the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Phone so our team can show you what happens next before you do much else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Don't crank it — and do not rely on it when it does start. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Switching the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't add diesel on top to water down it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, and we'd sooner drive to an odd location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on New Road Roundabout, turn your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Before you ring, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts PO9 1 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three answers determine the full job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough amount of it, plus if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through your injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over that Renault Clio outside the nearest station whilst the work gets done, and our team would far rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?

The work starts at the pump, usually. Quite often the job finishes at one too.

If you're still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is normally where the drain gets done — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the single setting this ends up halted.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and your lines along with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where your car is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Push the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces doesn't justify starting the engine.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Mercedes C-Class, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Aldi now. Time gone by is not the thing we need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

## Havant plus the places next to it

Stockheath, Brockhampton, Bedhampton, Langstone, Denvilles — all of those on our journeys that carry us out to Havant as well, a coastal town.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of locations in Hampshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Assuming is the mistake to skip, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav fails. Contact us and check.

The map marks the patch the page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of that requires your car to travel to us.

## Stranded on the roadside around Havant

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over anywhere suitable.

A common call for us rather than a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge beside New Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Whether you wait with your car or step clear of it turns on if staying there seems sensible.

Never fire it up to get to a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system.

Our van driving to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the local A3(M) comes in — under 3 miles away from Havant.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Don't start it to move it. Get off at the next sensible exit then switch off.

Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

Here is the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Havant Park call — a diesel Ford Kuga, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it leaks past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was built round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Havant itself

Havant is a coastal town situated in the south-east of Hampshire, England, with nearby cities including Portsmouth and Southampton. The town is part of a larger borough that also encompasses Hayling Island and other surrounding towns. Havant has undergone significant development, particularly in the years following World War II, when the area experienced a substantial transformation from rural land to residential housing. Its location near the coast and other major towns makes it a notable settlement in the region.

## When our engineers reach you in Havant: what follows

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- We drain the tank of the contaminated mixture.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later is not the thing that caused the issue.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- When it is turned on, we confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked close to Public Service Plaza. For a diesel Peugeot 208 whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, then let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get rinsed and not just the tank cleared.

## A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Havant

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Havant has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Havant?

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mixture goes into the filter, into your lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Volkswagen Polo that made it by Havant Leisure Centre needs its system purged. Emptying is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Havant motorists

## I am on a forecourt in Havant. Can you drain the car here?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Routinely, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer straight away.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the car off.

It is salvageable much more commonly than people fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the car?

Shut off is how it stays.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off.

A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people fear.

Call-out fuel draining around Havant and across Hampshire — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
