# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hayes? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Hayes and the remainder of Dorset. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Our engineers shall show you what the following part is. Ring us — it comes before anything else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car. Fired up anyway? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off also — flick it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.

- Don't water down it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Our team would sooner travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Martindale Avenue, that means hazards on and keep the car.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning BH21 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired. Those three details determine your whole call-out.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Branksome since this morning? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the drive in that sucked diluted diesel through your pump. Ring us before you fetch the car.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on the forecourt?

It kicks off at a pump, typically. Quite often it wraps up there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that is normally where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

At a garage, the mistake gets halted with the engine never fired, and nowhere else does that.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Worth doing.

Moving the car four bays does not justify firing the motor.

## Can our technicians reach your corner of Hayes?

Canford Bottom, Leigh, Little Canford, Colehill, Pilford — all of these on our journeys that carry us out to Hayes itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations around Dorset, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Presuming is the thing to resist, particularly on the border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Ring us to check.

This map marks the patch this page covers.

Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Twenty to nine. Outside Hayeswood First School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave your engine alone, then phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

## Stopped on the kerb somewhere around Hayes?

A chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up along the verge of Cedar Drive, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Stay by the vehicle if it is safe to sit in it, and out of it when it's not.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky place, and that's no problem for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

Your M27 is the one which matters now, and lies under 25 miles from Hayes.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

## All about Hayes

Hayes is a suburban area in Dorset, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 18 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Hayes lies near the villages of Canford Bottom, Leigh, and Little Canford, and is approximately 19.8 miles from the city of Salisbury. Hayes is also within commuting distance of London, being around 92.9 miles away. Hayes has a population of around 2813 people.

## What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Hayes

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The contaminated fuel comes out of that tank.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- Our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away.

Our technicians do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Our engineers flush the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Citroen C3 parked up by Colehill Memorial Hall a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hayes

The problem isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Hayes page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by Colehill Library or anywhere else, and never restart it to find a better location.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Hayes?

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Where your vehicle is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain it then put new diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Ford Fiesta near Canford Sports Centre and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the problem: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is suck it back through your pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The system gets flushed, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired vehicle from one that merely starts.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Hayes

## At a petrol station around Hayes, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more often than drivers assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Don't turn the car on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Hayes and throughout Dorset.
