# Headcorn: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop, then leave the motor off — not on, and not for a second to move the vehicle.

Cleared then flushed, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that straightforward rests on the minutes to come far more than on anything else.

From here on, in order, for anywhere around Headcorn:

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through the following before anything else, in this order.

- Pull your keys out. Even the ignition by itself can prime your fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the components it damages, and so keep the car off completely.

- Topping up with diesel sounds like it thins the trouble. It doesn't: nothing comes out, and your tank just carries more of the same.

- Visibility comes first beside moving traffic: put your hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.

- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, push it away from the pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to lend a hand.

- Keep the till receipt: the grade and the rough amount are printed on it, and they are what our technicians ask for first.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you are on the M20, under 10 miles from Headcorn, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services further on. Step one comes after that.

## Each Headcorn fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Not run, not even once:

- Just your tank has petrol in it so far.

- The work is a drain and a flush, normally done where the car is.

- This is the best spot to be in, and the reason stage one matters.

If it's been started, even for a moment:

- The lines and your filter now carry petrol drawn from your tank.

- On a longer run it has reached your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors.

- Lines flushed, the fuel filter seen to, occasionally more: the job grows as the miles does.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't.

In the tank, left alone, petrol does no harm.

The parts that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Headcorn

Whether the technician goes round or finds you depends on a little planning.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode starting TN27 9 is the best place to start.

- Name the street — High Street or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Or the nearest landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, such as the one outside Sainsbury's.

- The make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Headcorn page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and the way it was driven.

- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire or company agreements — so it's quicker to settle whose car it is before we get there.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## Headcorn fuel drain on its way? While you wait

The wait is where well-meant help does the damage. Hold to these.

- Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a few yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of that gets the petrol back out.

- A DIY drain leaves your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous too.

- Not for your radio, not for your windows: the ignition remains off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after our van arrives

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it's run. The answers shape this job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.

- Out of that tank comes the contaminated mixture: your tank is emptied.

- Petrol that has shifted beyond your tank sits in the fuel lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are flushed to shift it.

- The filter is dealt with. Cleared, or replaced where the car has a workable one.

- Bleeding the system follows once fresh diesel is in.

- Starting up. Once the fuel system is bled with clean diesel, we start the car and confirm it runs smoothly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our engineers head off.

Lasting damage is very rare if it has been spotted early, so the car can go right back to normal driving.

## Headcorn, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over and ring us back.

- Your documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
