# Headley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Headley or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

One ring our way will be enough: our engineers shall explain what follows after this. Try this first.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for several miles. People get that backwards. It is not all right — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.

- Switching the ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition alone.

- Do not thin it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Liphook Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.

- A van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning GU35 8, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you dial.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, approximately how much, and whether the car has been started. Those replies decide everything that follows.

Your high-pressure pump spent that morning drive working on a liquid that had shed most of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Passat, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting outside Liphook until the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a lot, which is why the thing our engineers put to you is about distance rather than hours. Call us. Keep the car exactly where it is.

## On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Most of the job starts at a pump, which means a fair share of it gets finished there.

The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at JET? Given the station's permission, that is a place our technicians work, and regularly.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the one place it ends up halted.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where the car sits.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the help.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we hope for sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now switched off outside Lidl.

## Areas our vans reach near Headley

Arford, Beech Hill, Headley Down, Passfield, Lindford — every one of those on the rounds that carry us out to Headley as well, a rural village.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of places across Hampshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours.

Phone to check instead of guessing, above all if you're on the border or anywhere your phone struggles with.

This map outlines the area the page covers.

We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car does not need to travel to us.

You will be advised to shift it out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags by The Holme Church of England Primary School, a misfilled Dacia Duster running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond the fuel filter towards the pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

## Stuck at the roadside in Headley

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop somewhere suitable.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Verner Close, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Sit by the vehicle when it's wise to be in it, but out of the vehicle if it isn't.

Don't start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the system.

Our van heading to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M3 matters, under 15 miles out of Headley.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to move it.

It changes what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car waits, since a diesel Citroen C3 parked outside Headley Village Green is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## About Headley

Headley is a small village in north-east Hampshire, situated in a rural area with nearby villages including Arford and Beech Hill. Headley sits at an elevation of around 95 metres, with its detached houses reflecting the local architectural style. Headley remains a quiet, residential community with a population of approximately 880 people, close to the South Downs National Park. Headley is also near the village of Headley Down, which is part of the same civil parish.

## What happens when our technicians reach you around Headley

- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.

- That tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- Once it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Our technicians purge the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already got to the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi Q5 parked up close to Headley Village Hall a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off.

## Headley AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the problem underneath it's a separate one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Headley has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We handle both.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Headley

What shifts the price is listed below, since the job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.

- This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.

- The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Headley motorists

## Fuel drains on a Headley petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more frequently than motorists fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the car?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.

Throughout Hampshire and in Headley: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
