# Heartsease: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Across Heartsease and the rest of Norfolk, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Phone and our engineers will show you what happens after that before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Never start it. Turned on regardless? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for several miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not all right — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be also: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into exactly those components.

- Never put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would much rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Falcon Road East, put those hazards on and leave the car there.

- Get your location ready before you call. A postcode starting NR7 9 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has been turned over. The replies shape whatever happens next.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside Norwich this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew diluted diesel through your pump was the run in. Ring us before you go to fetch it.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

A large portion of this work is done at the pump, since that's where it usually kicks off.

If you're still at the forecourt at Thunder Lane Garage, that's typically where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the one location this gets halted.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the assistance.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

## Service near Heartsease

Those same runs carry us to Sprowston, Thorpe St Andrew, New Sprowston, Gas Hill and Mill Hill besides Heartsease, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places across Norfolk, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours.

On the border, or anywhere your phone misreads? Call us to check rather than guessing.

The patch this page spans sits on our map.

Your car doesn't need to come to us. We work throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both prepared. Your Peugeot 308 will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from Falcon Junior School — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol car mostly will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

## Kerbside breakdowns across Heartsease

Some drivers get no suitable spot to pull over at all.

Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge on Salhouse Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of your car if it's not safe to wait in it, by it if it is.

Don't start up your motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the fuel system.

Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to a difficult spot, and that's no bother for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has moved

The M11 is the one that counts now, and runs over 50 miles from Heartsease.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and never restart it to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what we bring.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the further a diesel Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how that drive to Heartsease Recreation Ground went, then, and your tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

## A bit about Heartsease

Heartsease is a suburban area located on the eastern edge of Norwich, situated approximately 2.1 miles from the city centre. Heartsease sits at an elevation of 41 metres, in a relatively flat area of inland Norfolk, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Sprowston and Thorpe St Andrew. Heartsease has a population of around 5072 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Heartsease is also within commuting distance to London, being around 100.3 miles away.

## What happens when our technicians arrive with you around Heartsease

- The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.

- The polluted mixture is drawn from your tank.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed your system.

- The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

Three things help when you call from near Saint Francis Church: which side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, so the place itself is seldom the problem — we would much rather deal with a narrow parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your BMW 1 Series, change your filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines then put clean fuel through the whole system, as by this point the worst of that is waiting in the lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Heartsease?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — do not crank it — yet this issue is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Heartsease page. Both are ours to deal with.

The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than careless. New places see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up near Frere Road Community Centre without thinking, in a diesel Audi Q5 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone notices, and mileage decides how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Heartsease

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries around Heartsease

## I'm on a forecourt in Heartsease. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this takes place.

Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more often than drivers fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Norfolk and in Heartsease: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
