# Heath: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on your engine. If the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Heath and the remainder of Cheshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

We will show you what the following part is. Contact us — it happens ahead of all else.

## What to do next about petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and do not trust it when it runs. Here is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just won't run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off just fine for several miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which moves that petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.

- Never thin it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- We'd sooner drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Lycroft Close, that means hazards on then keep the car.

- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting WA7 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- What went in, approximately how many litres, and also if the motor has fired — those three facts determine the full call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning commute working on a fuel that had given up most of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing outside Runcorn until you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the thing we put to you is about distance not hours. Phone us. Leave it just where it is.

## Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at a forecourt?

The work starts at a pump, usually. Frequently the work wraps up there too.

Still at North West Fuels? Then that is generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

At a garage, the mistake is stopped with your motor never started, and no place else manages it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Staff will usually help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the help.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Can our technicians reach your end of Heath?

Grange, Rocksavage, Weston, Higher Runcorn, Halton Brook — every one of them on our journeys that take us out to Heath as well, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around Cheshire, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list says nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Call us and ask rather than assuming — borders above all, and anywhere your satnav can get wrong.

Check our map for the ground covered on this page.

Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your car never needs to come to us.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Pewithall School. They do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it usually won't run, and so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. Nothing warns you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to warn you about. Phone with roughly how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second one counts more than the first.

## Heath: stranded wherever you stopped

Some people get no sensible place to stop at all.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge of Crawford Place, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Clear of the motor if it's not safe to be in it, beside it when it is.

Do not start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the fuel system.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Three answers determine most of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we get to your car in the car park at The Cherry Tree. Then the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and the fuel system bled, we fire it up and check it runs properly before you pull away.

## Run it already? Pull in, then read this

under 3 miles out of Heath, the local M56 is what matters now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they come are generally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and do not restart it to reposition.

It changes what our engineers bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car sits, since a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked outside Runcorn Golf Course is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## Where's Heath?

Heath is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the coast and approximately 11.5 miles from Chester. Heath has a relatively low elevation of 68 metres and is part of a larger residential area that includes nearby Grange, Rocksavage, and Weston. Heath is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the typical North West English suburban architecture. Heath is also relatively distant from London, at around 166.5 miles away.

## What comes next when our engineers reach you around Heath

- The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.

- Our engineers drain that tank of all the tainted mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the trouble.

- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Three things help when you ring from close to Hope Corner Community Church: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place our technicians work, and so the location itself is hardly ever the issue — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking bay than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain the Vauxhall Astra, change the filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, because by this point the worst of it is waiting in the lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Heath?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Heath has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

## Heath pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

We can't put one price on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Heath

## Fuel drains on a Heath petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our engineers answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more often than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Standing next to it?

That engine stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
