# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Heath?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Heath or the remainder of Derbyshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Contact us before all else begins, and you'll learn what happens from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That's why you don't crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit most people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: turning it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so never add diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Moorland Drive? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd spot works for us better than a started engine.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting S44 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has run. These three details decide the full job.

The drive back would about double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane. So keep the car where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that is handier — nobody needs you hovering over the vehicle at Chesterfield while we work, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this job usually begins, and where a big part of it closes.

The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's agreement, that's somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

Before your motor has run — a garage is the only place the mistake is spotted.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where the car is.

The staff will generally help you push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing.

Starting the car just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

## Can our engineers cover your side of Heath?

As a village, Heath sees a routine call, and its neighbours nearby come with it on that same trip: Owlcotes and Holmewood, Williamthorpe and Sutton Scarsdale, Stainsby Common.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for most towns in Derbyshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Assuming is the thing to avoid, especially on the border or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Call us to enquire.

The map shows the area this page spans.

Every bit of it is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past your filter and into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags outside Heath Primary School is a hassle, while the same car restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. A passer-by will advise you to shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Leave it, let them grumble, and phone us.

## Stuck on the roadside around Heath

Not everybody gets the chance to stop anywhere suitable.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Lilac Close since you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Out of the vehicle when it isn't sensible to sit in it, with it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to an inconvenient location, and that is no bother for us.

Chance the journey home from Elm Tree? Don't. It will start and it will pull away perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank acts typically while wearing the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Ford Focus then phone.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under a mile from Heath, the M1 is what counts now.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first exit that is sensible, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

## Where's Heath?

Heath is a small village in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside in the East Midlands region of England. Heath sits at an elevation of 155 metres, approximately 13.8 miles from Sheffield and 127.5 miles from London. Heath has a population of around 621 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing, and is near to other local places such as Owlcotes, Holmewood, and Williamthorpe.

## What our engineers do when we reach you around Heath

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Away flows the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Our engineers put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.

From that point, you are ready to pull away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Seldom the issue, the location. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a narrow parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from close to Heath Village Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets drained, your filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Heath is a different matter

Never fire it up: that opening rule applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Heath page. Both are ours to handle.

The smaller petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of sloppy. Unfamiliar spots see most of it for that reason. So: filled up by All Saints - Heath without thinking, in a diesel Citroen C3 you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and distance decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Heath?

What moves the figure is set out below, since the job isn't one job and we can't frankly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank holds.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

## Heath drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Heath?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more frequently than drivers assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the engine switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Across Derbyshire and around Heath: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
