# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Heath Side?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Heath Side and the remainder of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Just one call our way is plenty: our engineers can show you what happens next. Do that first.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up — and don't rely on it if it runs. Here is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just won't run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for several miles. It isn't fine. It's eating into the fuel system as you drive.

- Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel performs two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is frequently enough to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Oakfield Lane, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.

- Before you ring, work out your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting DA2 7 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.

- Three replies settle the whole job: the liquid you put in, the approximate quantity involved, plus whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return journey would close to double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can wait at Crayford perfectly happily. Phone from the platform if simpler; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't needed.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Forecourts are where the work usually begins, and where a good part of that finishes.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, and so if you are still at Esso that is typically where the drain happens.

A forecourt is the single spot it gets caught before your motor has started.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where the car stands.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Well worth doing.

Starting it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

## Coverage near Heath Side

Hook Green, Bowmans, Maypole, Wilmington, Joydens Wood — every one of those on the runs that carry us over to Heath Side itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places in Kent, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Close to a border, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Ring us to enquire rather than assuming.

The ground the page spans is on this map.

Your vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine. By Wilmington Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave the engine alone, then ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a dash taken in a hurry demands a great deal of that.

## Stuck on the kerbside around Heath Side

Some drivers have no suitable spot to pull over at all.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: realised after setting off, ended up by the verge of Leyton Cross Road or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Don't fire up the motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the fuel system.

Our van coming to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

What our technicians will ask about is whether that run there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting in the car park at The Horse & Groom holding a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades as it stands, so leave the car there overnight then phone next morning.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where your M25 comes in, under 3 miles out of Heath Side.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are usually lost power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past gaps instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through — that's the whole process. It explains the ordinary Dartford Heath call too: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that travelled out without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## A bit about Heath Side

Heath Side is a suburban area in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of 36 metres, approximately 14.5 miles from London. Heath Side is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is located near other local places such as Hook Green, Bowmans, and Maypole. Heath Side has a population of around 790 residents, making it a small but distinct community within the wider area. Heath Side is also close to the city of London, with a distance of 13.3 miles to the nearest urban centre.

## Our call-out in Heath Side, step by step

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.

- The tainted mixture is drawn from your tank.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and checked to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## Heath Side AdBlue removal is a different problem

Don't fire it up: that first instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Heath Side page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full that tank was in a vehicle picked up two days ago, and we work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that is far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Vauxhall Astra close to Sports Hall.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Heath Side?

What shifts the figure is set out below, because this job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range.

If it isn't urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Heath Side

## At a petrol station around Heath Side, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Murco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep the vehicle off.

Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more often than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a dealership, since we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

The motor remains off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

On-site fuel draining in Heath Side and across Kent — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
