# Heather: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Heather or the remainder of Leicestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our engineers will tell you what your next step will be. Call us — that comes ahead of anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Don't crank it — and don't trust it when it runs. That is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off without complaint for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing your fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those parts.

- Never tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would much rather come to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Main Street, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.

- Before you call, work out your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts LE67 2 — that is what determines whether the van arrives or circles.

- What went in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has started — these three answers settle the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly begins, and where a big part of it ends.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Morrisons Daily that is usually where the drain happens.

Nowhere except a garage can this be halted with your motor still untouched.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the lines along with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the car sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Very much worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we are truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we like runs like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now turned off at The Co-operative Food.

## Service near Heather

Heather is a village, and so our vans go out to it and to the places near it on the usual trips: Ibstock, Swepstone, Normanton le Heath, Newton Burgoland and Odstone.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most towns around Leicestershire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Guessing is the thing to avoid, above all on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Call us to check.

The patch the page covers appears on our map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of that requires the car to travel to us.

## Stranded at the kerbside in Heather

Not everybody has the chance to pull in somewhere sensible.

Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge on Swepstone Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay beside the car or move away from it hangs on if being there feels wise.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

A technician driving to a tricky spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

Leave it overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Mercedes E-Class sitting in the car park by The Crown deteriorates whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays a straightforward one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question our technicians arrive with is about that drive there: a cold engine over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the sump.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the local M42 comes in, under 10 miles away from Heather.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't start it to move it. Come off at the next safe junction and turn off.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car sits, because a diesel Audi A3 left outside Heather Wood is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## About Heather

Heather is a village in Leicestershire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 133 metres. Heather lies near the towns of Ibstock and Swepstone, and is approximately 12.9 miles from Leicester. Heather has a population of around 1068 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Heather is located in the East Midlands region, about 98.7 miles from London.

## What our engineers do when we get to you in Heather

- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- The tainted mixture is drawn out of the tank.

- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the issue, and so the fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- Our technicians turn it on and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and since everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

We rinse the lines instead of only emptying your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Ford Kuga parked up by St John the Baptist a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us then leave it off.

## Heather AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Heather page. Both are ours to handle.

The slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Strange locations see most of that for that reason. So: filled up close to Heather Village Hall without thinking, in a diesel Hyundai Tucson you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage determines how much petrol reaches your injectors.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Heather

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

## Heather drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Heather?

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work happens.

We visit BP and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more frequently than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Don't switch your engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Across Leicestershire and in Heather: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
