# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Henley?

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Henley and the rest of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Ring us and our engineers can explain what comes next before you do much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Never fire it up — and do not depend on it if it fires up. Here is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just won't run, so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out your fuel system while you drive.

- Switching your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Mill Lane, anywhere — a difficult place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never moved.

- A van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts GL3 4, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you ring.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, roughly how much, plus whether your car has been run. The answers shape all that comes after.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A good portion of the work ends up finished at a pump, as that is where it mostly starts.

If you are still at the forecourt at Shell, that's usually where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's consent.

A forecourt is the only setting this gets stopped before your motor has started.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Move it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking it to move four car lengths isn't.

The phone call our engineers want runs like this: diesel Audi A4, some litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now shut off outside Tesco Extra. What we're actually asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Coverage near Henley

Henley is a residential suburb, and so our vans head out to it and to the areas near it on the usual rounds: Brockworth, Little Witcombe, Watermead, Bentham and Green Street.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most locations around Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Contact us and check instead of presuming — borders above all, and wherever a satnav tends to struggle with.

See this map for the ground covered on this page.

The vehicle never needs to travel to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Henley: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody has a chance to pull over anywhere suitable.

A common call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge beside Goldfinch Walk or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you wait with the motor or stand clear of it rests on if sitting in it seems sensible.

Don't fire up your engine to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system.

However difficult the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled

This is where your M5 comes in — under a mile from Henley.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What we bring changes.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel BMW 5 Series drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how that run to Henley Bank Community Wood went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off and call us.

## About Henley

Henley is a suburban area in Gloucestershire, situated on the riverside near Gloucester. Henley has a relatively low elevation of 69 metres and is located close to nearby places such as Brockworth and Little Witcombe. Henley is characterized by its predominant semi-detached housing stock and is home to a population of around 2003 residents. Henley is also within commuting distance to London, being approximately 89.5 miles away.

## What comes next when our technicians reach you around Henley

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Your tank gets drained completely.

- We flush the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what started the problem.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

Leave the Peugeot 208 close to Brockworth Sports Centre and phone us. We are blunt about not driving on because a worn pump sheds, and what it sheds passes on with your fuel to the injectors further along.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Henley is a different matter

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — but this issue is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Henley has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then ring us about the Citroen C3 close to Witcombe Village Hall, and don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Almost no one can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Henley

One figure would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank takes.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Whether our van can safely reach the car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

The fuel filter, the lines, your pump and its rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Volvo XC60 that got near Brockworth Free Church needs the circuit flushed instead of cleared.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions in Henley

## Fuel drains on a Henley petrol station forecourt

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent we attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It's fixable far more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

Your pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with the vehicle?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than people fear, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Henley and across Gloucestershire.
