# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Henllan? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Henllan or the remainder of Denbighshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Just one ring to us will be plenty: we will tell you what happens from here. Do it right away.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never start the car — and never rely on it if it does start. This is the bit drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just won't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It's eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel does two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.

- Never weaken it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we would sooner travel to a difficult location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Llindir Street, put those hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts LL16 5, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and also whether the car has run. Those three facts determine the full visit.

Quarter past eight, a quick refuel on the drive in, and you realise at about eleven — by which time your diesel BMW 3 Series has been left outside Abergele & Pensarn for three hours. Ring us then keep it right where it is. The drive in is the part that counts now, as diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates its high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump running on a fuel that had shed a lot of the protection it is made for — which is why the question our technicians ask is how far you drove, not how long the vehicle has been parked.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

The job starts at the pump, generally. Frequently the job wraps up there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at R Smith & Son, that's typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement.

The forecourt is the one place it can be caught before your engine has run.

Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines along with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where the car sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Worth doing.

Starting the car just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

## Areas our vans serve in Henllan

Being a village, Henllan has a routine visit, while the places round about go with it on the same trip: Cefn Berain and Bont-newydd, Copenhagen and Lenten Pool, Lawnt.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for most locations across Denbighshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours.

Ring us and check instead of guessing — borders above all, and anywhere the satnav can misread.

Look at the map for the area included here.

Your vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We operate across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It's twenty to nine by the local primary school, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and even though three miles in the Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, fuel is metered on demand, and a rushed run asks for plenty of it.

## Henllan: stranded wherever you parked

Some drivers find no suitable spot to stop whatsoever.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Denbigh Street because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Remain beside your car if it's sensible to wait there, yet clear of the car when it is not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We will send our van to an awkward place without any trouble, and for your car that is far better than pressing on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has travelled

The Moreton Spur is the road which matters here, and sits under 25 miles from Henllan.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the trip to Henllan Bee Garden, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, ring us.

## A little about Henllan

Henllan is a village situated on the banks of a river in Denbighshire, with a mix of rural and residential areas at an elevation of around 127 metres. Henllan lies close to the city of St Asaph, approximately 4 miles away, and is near other small settlements such as Cefn Berain and Bont-newydd. Henllan has a population of around 855 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Henllan is located about 183 miles from London, in a region of north Wales known for its scenic countryside.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Henllan

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.

- Out flows the tainted mixture.

- We purge the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what created the issue.

- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- The motor is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Ringing from close to Henllan Church Institute? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a technician next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would much rather have a tight spot than a car someone has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the Mercedes C-Class, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not that tank.

## Henllan AdBlue removal is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Henllan has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost no one knows how full that tank was in a car collected two days ago, and our technicians work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Dacia Duster close to War memorial.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Henllan

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range.

If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Henllan motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Henllan?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

We work at Morrisons and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more often than motorists fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

Afterwards? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Keep it turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way.

This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Emptying misfilled motors, Henllan and the rest of Denbighshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
