# Heworth: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Heworth and the remainder of North Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Phone and our engineers can show you what happens after that before you attempt any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Never start the vehicle. Turned on anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually will not run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would much rather come to a tricky place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Stockton Lane, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Have your location ready before you call. A postcode starting YO31 1 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how many litres, plus whether the engine has run. Those three facts settle the full job.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where this work usually kicks off, and where a big portion of that closes.

If you are still at the forecourt at Morrisons, that is normally where this drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

Before your motor has fired — a garage is the single setting it gets stopped.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key.

The attendants will generally happily move the car clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

## Heworth and the villages near it

Layerthorpe, Tang Hall, The Groves, Foss Islands, York — each of these on the runs that bring us out to Heworth too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most locations across North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Contact us to enquire instead of assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere the satnav tends to misread.

See our map for the patch included on this page.

Every bit of that is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

Hazards on. Motor off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine outside Heworth Church of England Primary School, you're late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, fuel gets supplied to demand, and a rushed dash asks for plenty of that.

## Stuck on the kerbside near Heworth

The chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge of Charles Moor, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit by the motor while it's safe to sit in it, and out of the vehicle if it is not.

Don't fire it up to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into the fuel system.

Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician driving out to a tricky location, and that is no problem for us.

What our technicians will want to know is if the run there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can get past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster sitting in the car park by The Nag's Head carrying a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades as it stands, so leave the car there overnight and phone us first thing.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 15 miles out of Heworth, the local A1(M) is what counts now.

A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It affects what we bring.

## A little about Heworth

Heworth is a suburban area located on the outskirts of York, near the lakeside and at an elevation of 18 metres. Heworth sits close to several neighbouring areas, including Layerthorpe, Tang Hall, and The Groves, and is predominantly composed of semi-detached housing. Heworth is situated approximately 1.1 miles from York city centre and 174.5 miles from London. Heworth has a population of around 5780 residents.

## What we do when we get to you around Heworth

- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The tank is emptied of everything.

- Our engineers flush the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what created the problem.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has your car ready to set off.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel Vauxhall Astra up by Heworth Methodist Church a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave the vehicle off. The short distance truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has reached the filter and the pump — which is why our technicians clean the lines instead of only draining your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Heworth is a different matter

Do not start it: that opening step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Heworth page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol reaching the fuel injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, so unfamiliar spots see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by Holy Trinity or not, and we'll get to the Citroen C3.

## Heworth pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much the tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle then put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Kia Sportage by Heworth Church Hall and the motor will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here is the catch: there's petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through your pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Phone us. The circuit gets cleaned, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a repaired motor from one that simply starts.

## Heworth drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Heworth petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

The pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Never turn it back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists fear.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Heworth and throughout North Yorkshire.
