# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in High Orchard?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across High Orchard and the remainder of Gloucestershire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Contact us before anything else begins, so you'll hear what happens next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Do not start the vehicle. Turned on anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that confused. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.

- Flicking your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.

- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so do not put diesel on top to water down it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Merchants Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.

- Our van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts GL1 5, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you dial.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the engine has started. These three replies determine the whole visit.

Quarter past eight, a rushed fill-up on the trip in, and the penny drops somewhere around eleven — by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been parked outside Gloucester for three hours. Phone and leave the car exactly where it sits. The run in is the part that matters now, as diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it burns, and before it burns it greases its high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were travelled with your pump running on a fluid that had lost much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the vehicle has been stood.

## At a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Much of this work starts at a forecourt, meaning a good part of that is done on site.

If you're still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that is generally where this drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the one place the mistake is spotted.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car is.

The attendants will usually offer to roll the car out from the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at The Food Warehouse now. Time gone by isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

## High Orchard plus the areas next to it

High Orchard is a residential suburb, and our vans go out to it and to the villages near it on those same runs: St Pauls, Gloucester, The Island, Pool Meadow and Linden.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Gloucestershire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours.

Ring us to enquire instead of guessing — boundaries above all, and wherever the satnav might get wrong.

That map shows the patch this page covers.

Your car doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol past the filter and into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags at St Paul's Church of England Primary School is a nuisance, while the same car started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will tell you to shift the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. Leave it, let everyone grumble, then phone us.

## High Orchard: stuck wherever you parked

A chance to stop somewhere sensible doesn't come to everyone.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge of Baker Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Remain with your car when it's wise to be there, but clear of it when it is not.

Do not start it up to get to a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the fuel system.

We will take our van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for your car that is far better than driving on.

## Driven it already? Stop, and check this

This is where your M5 comes in, under 3 miles from High Orchard.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under a mile to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring changes.

## A bit about High Orchard

High Orchard is a suburban area located on the riverside in Gloucestershire, with a low elevation of around 16 metres. High Orchard sits close to the city of Gloucester, being only 0.4 miles away, and is near other places such as St Pauls and The Island. High Orchard has a population of approximately 4987 people and predominantly consists of flat-type housing.

## Once our technicians reach you around High Orchard: what follows

- We find out what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- Our technicians clear the tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Your engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in High Orchard

Don't fire it up: that first instruction holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in High Orchard has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then ring us about the Dacia Duster near Marks & Spencer, and don't worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Nearly no one can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on the spot. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mix, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## High Orchard prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what changes it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: we flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you will get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Audi A6 close to Gloucester Waterways Museum and it will start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then your engine pulls the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

## Petrol in diesel questions from High Orchard motorists

## At a petrol station around High Orchard, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It's fixable much more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfilled cars, High Orchard and the rest of Gloucestershire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
