# High Park: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: the motor remains off. Pause there.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a drain and a flush, done where your vehicle sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes settles that far more than anything else.

What follows is the order from here, wherever in High Park you happen to be.

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

First, these — in this order.

- Pull the keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime your fuel system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it harms, and so leave it alone wholly.

- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.

- Near passing traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before anything else, and so your car is simple to see.

- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the mistake. At a forecourt, push it away from the pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to help.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that's where our questions start. Don't throw it away.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you're on the M58, under 10 miles from High Park, and stop somewhere sensible — not at the services further on. Stage one starts after that.

## High Park fuel drain: has the motor run yet, or not?

What happens next turns on one answer, and just one.

If it has never been started:

- The petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.

- Normally it's emptied and rinsed right where the car stands.

- No spot is better, and it's why the first step matters so much.

Motor run, however for a moment?

- Petrol has been pulled from that tank, past the filter then into the fuel lines.

- Your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors get it on a longer run.

- The farther it went, the bigger the job — the lines, your filter, and now and then more besides.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does.

Petrol sitting in a tank damages nothing.

Petrol being pumped is grinding down the components that shift the car.

## High Park, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

- PR9 7 plus the rest of the postcode is the best way to start telling us where you are.

- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Heysham Road, or wherever you have stopped.

- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so say the landmark — such as the one outside Spar.

- That it is a diesel, along with the make and model of the car.

- Which went in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus High Park has a page for it. So say.

- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and the way it was driven.

- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it is quicker to settle whose car it is before our engineers get there.

Call 0333 366 0103 once you have got that ready — or, if your car is at home, going nowhere, use .

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around High Park

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm while you wait. So stick to these.

- Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.

- No one — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift your car a short way.

- None of it gets the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.

- No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond your tank.

- Even your radio or your windows are not worth switching your ignition on for.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when the van gets there

- Fuel, amount, whether it has run: the replies set this job, and that is why you get a price after them instead of before.

- Your tank is emptied. The tainted mix comes out of your tank.

- The fuel lines are cleaned. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Where your car has a serviceable filter, it's replaced; otherwise, cleared.

- Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.

- Starting the car. After the fuel system is bled with new diesel, our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly.

Your car has fresh diesel running through it before our technicians go.

When it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon, and the vehicle goes back to normal use at once.

## After the fuel drain is done: driving around High Park once more

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may matter later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to your documents.

- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
