# Higher Change: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, don't switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave it off.

The next few minutes determine it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun generally comes down to clearing then rinsing, right there.

From now on, in order, wherever you are in Higher Change:

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Go through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

- Pull the keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of the tank to precisely the parts it damages, so leave the car alone entirely.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mixture.

- Hazards on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle simple to see before you do anything else.

- By hand, never on the motor: that is how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you roll, whatever the mileage.

- The first question we will ask is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the till receipt shows both. Keep it.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next junction if you're on the M66, under 10 miles from Higher Change, and stop somewhere sensible — not at the services farther on. Step one starts after that.

## Has it run yet? The fork in each Higher Change fuel drain

One answer is what everything after this stage rests on.

Not run, not even once:

- All the petrol remains in that tank, and only there.

- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally all of it.

- Stage one counts for precisely this reason: it is the best position to be in.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

- From your tank, past your filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far the petrol has travelled.

- On a longer run it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

- The job grows with the miles — lines flushed, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

In the tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

Move that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Higher Change: what our technicians need

Whether the technician circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- The ideal place to start is a postcode — one beginning OL13 9 — for where you are.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Todmorden Old Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Spar, and it is easy.

- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Higher Change page.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- The mileage it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.

- Settle who has the car ahead of when we get there: some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and doing it quicker beforehand.

Call 0333 366 0103 next. Writing to is fine as well if it can wait, with the car parked at home, going nowhere.

## Higher Change fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

The wait is where well-meant help does the damage. Hold to these.

- Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.

- A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out once more.

- No home-made clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is risky, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond your tank.

- Not for your radio, not for your windows: the ignition stays off.

## When the van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

- Fuel, volume, whether it's run: the answers decide the job, and that's why we give a quote after them rather than before.

- Draining it is how the mixture gets taken from that tank.

- If it ran, the lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond that tank — so they are rinsed.

- Where the vehicle has a usable filter, it's swapped; if not, cleared.

- Clean diesel goes in, and the system is primed.

- The start. With new diesel in and the fuel system primed, it's started and checked to make sure it runs properly.

Only when it is running on clean diesel do we go.

Your car goes back to normal driving at once, and long-term damage is very rare if it has been spotted early.

## Once the fuel drain is done: driving in Higher Change again

- Started on clean diesel, it asks nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.

- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop then ring us again.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so hold on to your paperwork.

- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
