# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Highfield

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift it. Stop; leave the car off.

Emptied then cleaned, right where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that straightforward rests on the minutes to come far more than on everything else.

Here is the order of things from here, wherever you are around Highfield.

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

First, these — in this sequence.

- Keys out of the ignition. Turning your ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol out of your tank toward the parts it damages. Leave it off completely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it only leaves you with extra of the same mixture.

- Make the car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere close to you.

- The staff will usually help you roll it clear of the petrol pump. Ask, and roll it by hand — not on your engine, even for a couple of yards.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt answers both, and that's where our questions start. Do not bin it.

On the M5, under 10 miles from Highfield, the next junction is the location to come off; anywhere, the first sensible place to stop. Don't press on to the services. Then go back to stage one.

## Highfield fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Engine never run at all?

- All the petrol sits in your tank, and only there.

- Usually it's drained and purged right where the vehicle is.

- Stage one counts for exactly this reason: it's the best spot to be in.

If the engine has been run, even for a moment:

- Petrol has been pulled out of the tank, through the filter then into your lines.

- On a bigger run it has got to your high-pressure pump as well as the injectors.

- The further it went, the larger the job — the lines, the filter, and sometimes more besides.

That line falls there since diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't.

A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing.

Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

## Highfield, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode starting EX14 4 is the best place to start.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that is Tower Way or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: say the one outside Co-op Food, and it is easy.

- Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and check it is diesel.

- Which was put in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Highfield has a page for it. So say.

- The amount: the receipt's litres, or else how long you had the nozzle in.

- If it has run, how far and how hard — as well as if it's run at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire and company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that's easier settled before our engineers get there than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works too.

## The wait for a Highfield fuel drain, and what to do in it

The wait is where well-intended help does the harm. Stick to these.

- Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- A kind passer-by doesn't crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.

- Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.

- No home-made clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is risky, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond your tank.

- Even the radio or the windows aren't worth turning your ignition on for.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after our van gets there

- First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the amount, and has it run? Those replies decide the job, and so the price follows them.

- Out of that tank comes the polluted mixture: your tank is emptied.

- Rinsing your lines follows, because a vehicle that ran has petrol past your tank, in the lines themselves.

- Your filter is sorted. Cleared, or replaced where the car has a workable one.

- Fresh diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.

- Our technicians fire it up only after fresh diesel has gone in and bled the system, then check that it is running properly.

Only once it's running on clean diesel do our engineers go.

The car goes back to normal use at once, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been spotted soon.

## Highfield, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on clean diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.

- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop then call us a second time.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the documents.

- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.

## Fuel drains across Highfield and nearby

Guessing does not help near a boundary or somewhere hard to explain; a quick ring and a query does.

## Petrol in a diesel in Devon? Leave it off then ring

Petrol in Diesel carries on from there — on your driveway, at the kerbside, at the forecourt — once you've done stage one: keys out, engine off, receipt in your pocket.
