# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Highfields? Don't Start It

Never fire up the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, across Highfields and the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Our engineers shall tell you what the following part will be. Phone — this happens before anything else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start it. And if started, don't trust it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into exactly those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Our team would much rather travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort out than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Davena Grove, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Keep your location ready before you dial. A postcode starting WV14 0 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has been started. Your responses determine whatever follows.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Renault Megane left outside Coseley this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked thinned diesel through your pump was the run in. Ring us before you head off to fetch it.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A big portion of the job is done at a forecourt, since that's where it usually begins.

The drain usually gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

At a forecourt, this is stopped with the motor never run, and nowhere else manages that.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines together with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Move it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting it to roll four car lengths is not.

Car parks like the one outside Asda are a spot our technicians work in frequently, and your fuel is hardly ever the awkward part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier on the way in that settles whether our van can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way your car is pointing. If we can't work next to your diesel Volkswagen Passat we'll shift the car without firing it — and that is not fussiness about a few seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and draws more of the blend out of the tank and toward your pump, so a vehicle shuffled twice into a better spot has silently grown into a worse job than one left just where it stopped.

## Places our vans cover in Highfields

Highfields is a residential suburb, and our team get out to the town and to the places around it on the usual rounds: Daisy Bank, Ladymoor, Bradley, Hall Green and Batmans Hill.

There are separate pages for nearly all places around West Midlands, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing about if we come.

Contact us to ask instead of presuming, above all when you are on a boundary or anywhere your satnav misreads.

That map marks the patch the page covers.

The lot is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move the car anywhere.

## Broken down by the roadside near Highfields

The opportunity to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Landed along the verge beside Highmoor Close, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Stay beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it.

Do not fire up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mix further into your fuel system.

We'll send the van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the car that's far better than driving on.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then see this

under 3 miles out of Highfields, your M6 is what matters now.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Pull off at the first sensible exit and turn off.

Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

## A bit about Highfields

Highfields is a suburban area located near Wolverhampton, sitting at an elevation of 155 metres near a lakeside setting. Highfields is characterized by its semi-detached housing and is situated close to nearby places such as Daisy Bank, Ladymoor, and Bradley. Highfields is home to a population of approximately 5159 residents and is about 3 miles from Wolverhampton city centre. Highfields is also relatively distant from London, at around 110 miles away.

## Once we get to you in Highfields: what we do

- The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- Our technicians empty the tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Calling from near St Martin? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van beside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself hardly counts: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd far rather have a tight spot than a motor a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the Mercedes E-Class, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not that tank.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Highfields

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue in its place.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Highfields has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost nobody knows how full that tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the BMW 5 Series by Darkhouse Baptist Church.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Highfields

One figure wouldn't be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank takes.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor packing up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anyone phones. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Audi A6 now sitting close to Beth's Arch. Turn it off and call us.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Highfields

## At a petrol station around Highfields, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more frequently than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
