# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Highgate

Do not start the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Highgate and the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Ring us and then our engineers will tell you what happens after that before you attempt anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start it. And if started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those components.

- Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Highgate Street, turn those hazards on then leave it there.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting B12 0, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, and also whether the engine has fired. Those three replies settle the entire call-out.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Renault Megane sitting at Bordesley this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone before you set off to fetch the vehicle.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Most of this work begins at the pump, which means a good part of that gets finished at one.

If you are still on the forecourt at Rea Bridge Service Station, that is normally where this drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

A filling station is the one spot this can be stopped before your engine has started.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys.

The staff will normally help you roll the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? No.

## Highgate and the areas beside it

These same journeys bring us to Deritend, Digbeth, Balsall Heath, Bordesley and Lee Bank as well as Highgate, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for most places in West Midlands, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing about if we come.

Presuming is the thing to avoid, especially on a boundary or anywhere the satnav fails. Ring us and check.

This map is the ground this page spans.

We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

A diesel pump supplies fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in your BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine outside Lift Percy Shurmer, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

## Stranded by the kerbside somewhere in Highgate?

Not everyone finds a decent spot to stop.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Horton Square because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Whether you remain by the car or move away from it turns on whether being there seems sensible.

Never fire it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the fuel system.

A van coming to an awkward location is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local Aston Expressway comes in — under 3 miles away from Highgate.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that is safe, stop there, and never start the car to move it.

It alters what we bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Ford Focus went, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to New Hope Community Park went, then, and the tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

## Highgate itself

Highgate is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Rea and close to the city centre of Birmingham. Highgate has a relatively low elevation of 109 metres and is located near other nearby places such as Deritend, Digbeth, and Balsall Heath. Highgate is predominantly composed of flat housing and has a population of approximately 9211 residents. Highgate is also relatively far from London, at a distance of 100.1 miles.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you around Highgate

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- Away goes the contaminated mixture.

- Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what is left in the system is not what caused the issue.

- The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.

- Your engine is started and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

Why so firm about leaving the keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of the injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses on with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Mercedes E-Class by Highgate Baptist Church.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Highgate

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — but the problem is not.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Highgate page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up by Reverend Peter Stanford that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Highgate

One figure wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much that tank holds.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Whether a van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Highgate

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Highgate?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

The pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Is the car still with you?

Switched off is how it remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Highgate and across West Midlands.
