# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Highway

With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Highway and the remainder of Berkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Contact us and then our technicians shall explain what comes from here before you try anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, never rely on it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Switching your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition be.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We'd sooner travel to an awkward location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Pinkneys Road, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.

- The van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts SL6 5, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you dial.

- What got in, approximately how much, plus whether your car has started — these three answers settle your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a large part of that closes.

If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that is usually where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

A forecourt is the only setting it is halted before your motor has run.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the car sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the assistance.

Rolling it four lengths doesn't warrant cranking it.

## Can our technicians cover your corner of Highway?

Highway is a residential suburb, and our team go out to it and to anywhere around it on the same trips: Tittle Row, Boyn Hill, Pinkneys Green, Stubbings and Cox Green.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all places in Berkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Contact us to ask rather than guessing — boundaries especially, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.

See the map for the area shown here.

The car never needs to move to us. We operate throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Highway: stranded wherever you parked

A chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not come to everybody.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge on Farm Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Clear of your car if it is not sensible to be there, beside it if it is.

Don't start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the system.

Driving on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to a tricky location, and that is no problem for us.

Your Audi A4 remains where it is in the car park by New Inn for the whole job, which generally goes like this. First our technicians ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since, because most of the work rests on those replies. The tank is emptied of the contaminated mix, your lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, your car is fired up and tested, and once it is running correctly you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

This is where the local A404(M) comes in — under a mile from Highway.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition.

It affects what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains the ordinary Boyne Hill Cricket Club call: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that travelled out there without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past tolerances instead, and your engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## All about Highway

Highway is a suburban area in Berkshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 55 metres. Highway lies within the commuter belt, approximately 26.9 miles from London and 23.7 miles from St Albans, with nearby places including Tittle Row, Boyn Hill, and Pinkneys Green. Highway has a population of around 7355 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## Our visit in Highway, step by step

- The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.

- Out comes the polluted fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that created the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running correctly.

Then it's ready to drive away.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is before your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds onward with your fuel. Call us. Leave the Dacia Duster close to Methodist Church.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Highway?

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Highway page. Both are ours to deal with.

Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Saint Mark's Hospital Church or anywhere else, and do not restart it to find a better spot.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Highway?

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what varies it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank holds.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Whether a van can safely reach your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

What happens next is the trouble. Your engine immediately pulls the petrol left waiting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, somebody confident will tell you — and that suggestion is half true, since do it to a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up, Boyn Grove Library say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Phone us instead. We flush the system and take the filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle only starting.

## Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Highway

## Fuel drains on a Highway petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work gets done.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the vehicle off.

It is recoverable far more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

Don't turn your engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Berkshire and in Highway: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
