# Hillborough: Petrol in a Diesel Car? How Worried to Be

Far less than you likely are, provided it has not been started.

Petrol sitting in a diesel tank does nothing to your engine until something pulls it through your fuel system — your ignition priming the pump, the starter, or driving itself. So the fair answer to the first question anyone in Hillborough asks, "have I ruined it?", is usually no.

Leave the motor off and ring Petrol in Diesel — that keeps it like that.

Read on for three things: the effect petrol has inside a diesel motor, the clues of how far it has spread, and the way to make sure you never do it again.

## Inside the engine: what petrol in a diesel does

On its way through a motor, diesel does two tasks.

Before it burns, it lubricates — then it burns.

Very fine gaps are built into the injectors and the high-pressure pump, and only the diesel flowing through stops those surfaces grinding together.

Badly at the first, not at all at the second: that is petrol.

Being less viscous than diesel, petrol strips away the protection a fuel system needs, so a pump running on that mixture wearing itself. It's equally made to resist igniting under compression — the reverse of what a diesel needs — which is where you hear the knocking.

Seen together, they make clear the shape the issue has.

Contact does not do the harm — circulation does.

Where that petrol is only in that tank, it's a problem of fuel, nothing more.

A pump that has been working on that petrol is the beginning of a mechanical one, and whatever a worn pump sheds moves on with the fuel to your injectors further on.

## Petrol in a diesel in Hillborough: how bad is it? Four cases

The best case there can be: filled up, never started.

On a forecourt, and really only there, the petrol is still confined to that tank — since everywhere else the vehicle was driven to reach it. The task is draining and rinsing on the spot.

A moment's running, or just the ignition on.

Once primed, your system has pulled petrol out of your tank up to your filter and the fuel lines.

Still normally easy: drain, flush, and the filter sorted.

The pump now worked a couple of miles on diluted fuel — that is what driving it meant.

The work is that tank, your lines, your filter and fresh fuel through the whole system, and how hard the vehicle was driven matters as much as how far.

The school run to Reculver Church of England Primary School is one matter.

Driving as far as Canterbury, under 10 miles away, makes a very different task — as does any miles on the M2, under 15 miles from Hillborough, with the motor running hard all the way.

Driven on till it protested — rattling, smoke, an uneven idle, a soft throttle.

What you are hearing is the motor signalling fuel that no longer acts like diesel.

Stop wherever you are — the verge on Reculver Road, a lay-by, a side street — and leave the vehicle where it is.

The fuel drain and flush still come first, and they deal with it: when a car is pulled over soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## What Hillborough people get told about petrol in a diesel — and the stories in it

Myth: "Fill it the rest of the way with diesel and it'll be fine." It will not.

Nothing is removed when you top up — the tank just carries more of the same blend.

The assumption behind the advice — that diesel fuel systems tolerate petrol by percentage — is wrong.

If anything, the opposite holds. Myth: "A newer diesel can cope with a bit of petrol."

Lubrication matters more on newer diesels, not less, since their fuel runs through more precise parts at higher pressure.

One myth that catches people out: if it starts and drives, it must be unharmed.

Diesel in a petrol motor usually means a motor that won't run: the motorist stops, and so does the harm.

Feed petrol to a diesel and it generally fires up, idles and drives away like nothing has happened — all the while its pump wears.

Fine and running are not the same thing.

An old fix for a distinct fault is behind this one. Myth: "Add some two-stroke oil and drive it home."

None of what petrol diluted gets put back by it — and afterwards, the tank still holds the petrol.

The next start sends petrol back round the pump out of the lines and the fuel filter, where some of that sits once your engine has been run. That is why a DIY tank drain does not sort it — a myth.

It is also truly risky to drain petrol into a can at the kerbside.

## Petrol in a diesel: how does it happen?

It's rarely carelessness, and nobody does it on purpose.

A diesel nozzle mostly will not fit a petrol car, yet the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into the filler of a diesel nearly without resistance — so forecourts make this one error easy, and just in one direction.

Habit and the vehicle getting out of step is when it takes place.

Courtesy car, hire car, or a vehicle that is new.

Two vehicles on one drive, one petrol, one diesel.

The pumps in a different order on a well-known forecourt.

A train to catch, and a rushed fill en route to Herne Bay.

The first fill-up in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan after years of driving petrol is exactly the moment it takes place.

Add a back seat full of kids, a phone call or rain, and habit wins.

## Avoiding petrol in a diesel next time you fill up around Hillborough

- Read the petrol pump, not the colour. In the UK unleaded handles are usually green and diesel black, yet not on each forecourt. The label is what matters.

- The first fill in an unfamiliar car is the time to check your filler flap — on it, or on the cap, many cars state the fuel they take.

- Label your key. In a house with one of each, a coloured fob or a sticker on your diesel's key does more than any amount of intending to remember.

- Say it before you lift it. On your first fill in a new or hired car, say "diesel" aloud before you lift the nozzle off the petrol pump. It seems silly and it does the trick.

- Mistakes like this are simple to make whilst your mind is on something else, and so the phone goes away.

- Up to a point, a misfuel inhibitor helps: some diesels have a filler built to refuse a petrol nozzle, and add-on devices are available for the remainder. Count it as a backstop, then keep reading the petrol pump.

- As soon as you notice, stop: less petrol in that tank makes a thinner mixture. What to do next does not change, though — still do not start the car.

## Petrol already in a diesel around Hillborough? Start here

Then the order of things is brief.

Don't start the vehicle, and don't turn your ignition on.

If you're still at the forecourt — Sainsbury's or anywhere else — ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

Next, 0333 366 0103. We'll ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has been run.

AdBlue, not petrol? Then say so. Corrosion and deposits, not lost lubrication, make it a different issue — Hillborough has a page all for it.

## What makes one Hillborough petrol in a diesel job cost more than the next

A fair single price does not exist here: four scenarios, four separate jobs.

Chiefly, your cost shifts with which one you're in.

Two things come after that: the petrol that got in as a share of what your tank takes, then the spot your car is in and whether a van can reach it safely.

What went in, how much, and whether it's run — three questions we ask before costing, not after, for precisely that reason.

The replies turn a range into a straight figure.
