# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hillhouse? Don't Start It

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Hillhouse and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Our team can explain what the following part will be. Call us — this comes ahead of everything else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And if started, don't believe it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which carries this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so don't add diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that has never moved is the easiest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Calton Street? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. An awkward place works for us better than a started diesel.

- A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting HD1 6, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how much, and if the car has started. Those three details settle the whole visit.

## At the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

The work starts at a forecourt, typically. Often enough the work ends at one too.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Tesco that is generally where the drain takes place.

At the forecourt, it gets spotted with the engine never fired, and nowhere else manages it.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where your car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Move it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Cranking the car just for four vehicle lengths? No.

The tricky part is the bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides whether our van can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at The Food Warehouse, mention how much space there's about you and which way round your car is. Those our engineers visit often. Should there be no space to work alongside the diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that mixture leaves that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have gradually made a harder job of what was merely a vehicle sitting still.

## Do we reach your part of Hillhouse?

Hillhouse is a residential suburb, and we go out to it and to the places near it on those same runs: Shearing Cross, Fartown, Birkby, Newtown and Bradley Mills.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and nearly all places across West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Call us and enquire rather than assuming, especially where you are on the boundary or somewhere your phone can't find.

The map shows the area this page covers.

All of it is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Hazards on. Engine off. Call us. It is twenty to nine outside Birkby Junior School, you are late, and your receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, fuel gets metered on demand, and a hurried dash needs plenty of that.

## Stuck by the kerb somewhere in Hillhouse?

The chance to stop somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody.

A normal call for us instead of an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Hillhouse Lane or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Safe there? Wait with it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

However difficult the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

Three replies determine much of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the vehicle in the car park by Slubbers Arms. Next the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Peugeot 308 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and your system bled, our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly before you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

Here is where the M62 counts, under 3 miles away from Hillhouse.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our technicians bring.

Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the usual Norman Park call — a diesel Nissan Qashqai, out there without a murmur and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was built around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where is Hillhouse?

Hillhouse is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the River Calder at an elevation of 74 metres. Hillhouse is located close to several nearby places, including Shearing Cross, Fartown, and Birkby, and is approximately 9.4 miles from Bradford. Hillhouse has a population of around 6337 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Hillhouse is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 163.9 miles.

## What happens when we arrive with you around Hillhouse

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The tainted mixture comes from that tank.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- Our technicians start it and make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Three things help when you call from close to Shri Guru Singh Saba Sikh Temple: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location our technicians work, and so the place itself is rarely the problem — we'd much rather deal with a narrow parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your Dacia Duster, change your filter where there is a workable one, flush the fuel lines then put fresh fuel through the entire circuit, because by this point the worst of it is resting in the fuel lines instead of in your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hillhouse is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — whereas this issue beneath it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the protection the system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Hillhouse page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Hillhouse

One price would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Hillhouse motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Hillhouse, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work takes place.

Our technicians work at Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off.

Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Still with the car?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later on.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists fear.

Throughout West Yorkshire and around Hillhouse: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
