# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hilsea? Don't Start It

Don't turn on the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Hilsea and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

A single call to us is enough: our technicians can tell you what comes from here. Try it first.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That is why you don't crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Flicking the car's ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Norway Road? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky location suits us better than a started engine.

- Have your position ready before you dial. A postcode starting PO3 5 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, approximately how much, and if the motor has been turned over. Those answers shape all that happens next.

Phone us before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and it at the nearest station ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any harm happened on the run in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

The job begins at a forecourt, mostly. Frequently the work ends at one too.

If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where the drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before the engine has fired — a forecourt is the single setting the mistake is caught.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where your car stands.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving it four bays does not warrant firing the engine.

## Service around Hilsea

St Francis Court, Vicarage Row, Anchorage Park, Highbury, Copnor — each of those on the rounds that take us out to Hilsea itself, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for most towns in Hampshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours.

Presuming is the thing to skip, especially on a boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us to ask.

Check the map for the patch shown here.

We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the car never needs to move to us.

## Stuck on the roadside somewhere around Hilsea?

Not everyone has a chance to stop somewhere safe.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed by the verge of Farmside Gardens, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Out of your car if it is not safe to be in it, by it when it is.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

Driving on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no problem for us.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then read below

Here is where the M27 comes in, under a mile from Hilsea.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how that trip to Gatcombe Gardens went, your tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Peugeot 3008 went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off and call us.

## All about Hilsea

Hilsea is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and approximately 62 miles from London. Hilsea is characterized by its low elevation of around 2 metres above sea level and its predominantly flat-type housing. Hilsea is close to several nearby places, including St Francis Court, Vicarage Row, and Anchorage Park. Hilsea has a population of around 6630 residents.

## Our job around Hilsea, step by step

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- The tainted mixture is pulled out of the tank.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that started the trouble.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Your engine is started and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Our engineers do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

The pump rests upstream of the injectors, and so whatever a worn one sheds travels downstream with the fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Vauxhall Astra where it's by Bastion 3, Hilsea Lines.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hilsea is a separate job

The problem is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Hilsea has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Kuga, a fill-up near Hilsea Lines that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the fuel injectors.

## Hilsea prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians can't put one price on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much that tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven again before somebody rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and your diesel Kia Sportage is now waiting close to Bastion 4, Hilsea Lines. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of a motor failing. Switch off. Phone us.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Hilsea

## I'm on a forecourt in Hilsea. Can you drain it on the spot?

A fair share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists expect, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.

Emptying wrongly fuelled motors, Hilsea and the rest of Hampshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
