# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hinstock

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Hinstock and the remainder of Shropshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Ring us before all else starts, so you will know what happens after that.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Never start the vehicle — and do not depend on it when it starts. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just can't run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It is not okay. It's wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off too: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- Do not water down it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Church Street? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A difficult place suits us better than a started engine.

- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning TF9 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.

- What got in, about how many litres, and also whether your car has fired — these three answers settle your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job often kicks off, and where a fair part of that ends.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

The forecourt is the one location this is caught before your engine has run.

Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where your car stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The staff will normally offer to wheel the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing.

Moving the car four spaces does not justify cranking the engine.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Volkswagen Passat around Hinstock and you're now stuck at Asda with a boot packed with shopping, phone us. Don't crank it once more to get out of that space. We will head your way, drain the tank, clean those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at gentle throttle pulls very little diesel, which is why these are often the easy cases.

## Parts we cover around Hinstock

Being a rural village, Hinstock gets a steady visit, and its neighbours nearby come with it on the same journey: Ashfields and Woodlane, High Heath and Hillwicket, Ellerton.

There are dedicated pages for most locations across Shropshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing about if our technicians come.

Ring us and check rather than presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever the satnav might get wrong.

The map is the patch this page spans.

Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that is what someone will say, and it is wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags outside Hinstock Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 308 is a hassle and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, since priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through your filter toward your pump. Let people moan. Phone us.

## Hinstock: broken down where you pulled up

Some drivers have no safe place to pull over at all.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on A529 because you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Clear of the motor while it's not sensible to be inside, with it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

However inconvenient the spot, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than driving on.

It will start. It will move off quite happily. That is the trouble, since a diesel on a thinned tank behaves typically whilst wearing the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't chance the trip home from The Falcon Inn — leave the Audi A4 and call us.

## Run it already? Pull over, then check below

under 15 miles out of Hinstock, your M54 is what counts now.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's safe, pull up there, and do not start the car to move it.

On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what we bring.

## Hinstock itself

Hinstock is a small village in Shropshire, situated in the inland countryside of the West Midlands region. Hinstock sits at an elevation of around 85 metres, with nearby places including Ashfields, Woodlane, and High Heath. Hinstock is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, and is located approximately 17.5 miles from Stoke-on-Trent. Hinstock has a population of around 528 residents.

## The job around Hinstock, step by step

- Our technicians establish what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- We empty the tank of all the polluted fuel.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, so the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.

- The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.

- The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Three things help when you call from near Saint Oswald (Hinstock Parish Church): which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our engineers work, and so the spot itself is seldom the issue — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the Mercedes C-Class, change your filter where there is a usable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the entire system, because by this point the worst of it is resting in the lines rather than in that tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Hinstock?

Don't fire it up: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Hinstock page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Hinstock

One figure would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

By this point your tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that made it by Sambrook Village Hall needs the circuit purged, not cleared.

## Hinstock drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Hinstock petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more commonly than people fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Shropshire and around Hinstock: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
