# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hockerill: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave it off.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is generally a simple drain plus a flush, done where your vehicle sits, and what happens in the coming few minutes settles that far more than anything else.

Below is the sequence from here, anywhere in Hockerill you are.

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through the following first, in this order.

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank into the parts it harms.

- A bigger tank of the same mixture is all topping up gives you, since it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.

- Hazard lights on. If you are at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.

- By hand, not under the engine: that is how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you push, whatever the mileage.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt replies that, and that's where our first question starts. Never bin it.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M11, under 3 miles from Hockerill, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Stage one comes after that.

## Each Hockerill fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

Not run, not even once:

- Nowhere but your tank: that is where the petrol yet is.

- Where the car sits is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- This, here, is the best place to be in, and the reason stage one matters.

If the motor has run, even briefly:

- Out of the tank, past your filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far that petrol has travelled.

- A bigger run carries it all the way to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- Flushing the lines, your filter sorted, and sometimes more: this job grows as the miles does.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't.

A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing.

As soon as it is pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Hockerill: what our technicians need

Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- Where you are. A postcode starting CM23 2 is the ideal place to start.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that's Kings Court or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Or the landmark. A car park is quicker to find by what it serves, like the one outside Sainsbury's.

- Make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.

- What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Hockerill, so say which.

- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.

- The distance it did, and how heavily, if it ran at all.

- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire or company contracts — so it's quicker to settle whose motor it is before our technicians get there.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## Hockerill fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, stay with it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a few yards.

- None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.

- No DIY clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond your tank.

- The ignition stays off. Even for your radio or your windows.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

- Fuel, volume, whether it has run: the replies decide the job, and that's why we give a price after them rather than before.

- That tank is cleared. The polluted mix comes out of your tank.

- If it ran, the fuel lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond your tank — so they're cleaned.

- Then the filter: swapped where there is a workable one, cleared where there is not.

- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.

- First start on clean diesel. Once bleeding is finished, your engine is fired up and our engineers confirm that it runs properly.

The vehicle has new diesel running through it before we leave.

If it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon, and your car goes back to normal driving straight away.

## Hockerill, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Started on clean diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop then ring us a second time.

- Your documents covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
