# Hockley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in the tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Hockley or the remainder of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Our engineers can show you what the following move will be. Phone — this happens before all else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, never believe it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests — so don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hockley Hill, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Have your position ready before you call. A postcode starting B18 5 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and the van circling.

- What went in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has started — these three details settle your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Call us before you move the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and the vehicle outside Jewellery Quarter ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and any wear came on the run in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A big portion of the work gets done at the pump, since that's where it mostly begins.

Still at JET? Then that is normally where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.

A forecourt is the single location the mistake is spotted before the engine has started.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

The attendants will normally help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. That is worth doing.

Cranking it just for four car lengths? Don't.

## Will our technicians cover your end of Hockley?

All Saints, Newtown, Gib Heath, Brookfields, Lozells — every one of those on the runs that bring us across to Hockley as well, a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns around West Midlands, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Close to the border, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Contact us and ask rather than assuming.

The ground this page spans sits on our map.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of that needs the car to travel to us.

## Hockley: stuck wherever you stopped

Some people get no safe spot to pull over whatsoever.

A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge on Boulton Middleway or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you remain with your car or move away from it hangs on whether being there is sensible.

Don't fire up the engine to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into your fuel system.

We will take our van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than carrying on.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are grinding instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off quite happily. Risk the journey home from White House? Don't. Ring us and leave the BMW 5 Series where it stands.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the Aston Expressway matters, under a mile from Hockley.

A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Do not restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit and switch off.

Long drive? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

Out there fine, back gutless. If that was the run to Saint Georges Park, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Vauxhall Astra covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, phone us.

## Where is Hockley?

Hockley is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Rea and close to the city centre of Birmingham. Hockley sits at an elevation of around 130 metres, with nearby neighbourhoods including All Saints, Newtown, and Gib Heath. Hockley is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and its proximity to Birmingham, being only 1 mile away from the city. Hockley is also located approximately 102 miles northwest of London.

## Once we reach you in Hockley: what follows

- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.

- Our engineers drain your tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- We turn it on and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

There's no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Ford Kuga parked by Unity Church of God scarcely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence flushing your lines rather than only emptying that tank.

## A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hockley

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the issue beneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue in its place.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Hockley has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

## Hockley prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that made it near Alfred Bird needs the system flushed, not emptied.

## Hockley drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt in Hockley. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It's salvageable much more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Don't turn it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining misfilled cars, Hockley and the rest of West Midlands, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
