# Hole House: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Hole House and the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Phone so our technicians will tell you what follows from here before you attempt anything else.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up — and never believe it if it does start. This is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel generally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out the fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off too — switch it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we would sooner travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Leicester Road, turn those hazards on then keep the car there.

- Get your position ready before you ring. A postcode that starts BB1 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, about how many litres, and whether the car has been run. Your replies decide all that comes after.

Quarter past eight. A rushed top-up on the drive in. Close to eleven it dawns on you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Blackburn for three hours. Ring us then leave it where it sits. What is key is the trip in, as diesel both combusts and — before that — greases the pump and the injectors, but petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked your pump on a fluid drained of a lot of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the question about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave your keys where they are until our engineers arrive.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A big part of the work gets done at a pump, as that is where it often begins.

The drain usually takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the site's agreement, that is a place our technicians work, and regularly.

Nowhere else but a garage can this be caught with the engine still unstarted.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a calamity, and we deal with it where the car is. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the offer.

Firing the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

## Hole House plus the villages next to it

Green Bank, Whitebirk, Intack, Daisyfield, Queens Park — each of them on the runs that take us over to Hole House as well, a residential suburb.

There are pages for most towns in Lancashire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether we come.

Near a boundary, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Contact us to enquire instead of assuming.

That map shows the patch this page includes.

The car does not need to move to us. We operate throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Intack Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave the motor alone, and phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a run taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.

## Broken down on the kerbside in Hole House

Not everybody has a suitable place to pull in.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge on Hereford Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by your car or stand clear of it rests on if staying in it seems sensible.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult spot, and that is no bother for us.

A diesel Nissan Qashqai in the parking area at The Toll Bar holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up until someone takes it home. Park it overnight and call us first thing. Nothing degrades whilst it sits. What we will ask is whether that trip there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the oil.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under a mile from Hole House, the local M65 is what matters now.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's safe, pull up there, and do not restart it to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, because a diesel Audi A4 left outside Queen's Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## A bit about Hole House

Hole House is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Lancashire, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Hole House sits at an elevation of 137 metres, approximately 10 miles from Preston and 183 miles from London. Hole House is located near other local areas, including Green Bank, Whitebirk, and Intack, and has a population of around 8123 residents. Hole House forms part of the wider urban landscape of the North West region.

## When we reach you around Hole House: what happens

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The polluted mixture is drawn out of your tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Your engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

## Hole House AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — while the fault under it's a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits instead.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Hole House has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Hole House?

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank can hold.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Repaired and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you'll get — drain it, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel BMW 5 Series close to St Stephen and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Hole House drivers

## Fuel drains on a Hole House petrol station forecourt

A big share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with the vehicle?

Keep the car turned off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

Across Lancashire and around Hole House: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
