# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Holmesdale?

Don't turn on the motor. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, all over Holmesdale and the remainder of Derbyshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Phone and then we can explain what follows next before you do anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Do not crank it. Fired up anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for just those components.

- Never water down it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we would rather travel to an odd place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on The Knoll, switch your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Get your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode beginning S18 2 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, and if the motor has started. These three replies determine the entire job.

Quarter past eight, a hurried fill on the road in, and it dawns on you around eleven — by that point the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been left at Dronfield for three hours. Phone us then leave the car exactly where it stands. The trip in is the bit that is key now, because diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it burns, and before it burns it protects its injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with the pump labouring on a liquid that had given up most of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing we ask is how far you went, not how long the car has been sitting.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at the forecourt?

It begins at a pump, mostly. Frequently the job finishes on site as well.

If you're still at the forecourt at Total, that is normally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one location the mistake gets caught.

Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.

The staff will generally happily push the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Aldi, somewhere in Holmesdale? Then phone, and leave your engine out of it — not even to exit the spot. A technician comes out to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile draws hardly anything, so these tend to be the easy ones.

## Do our engineers reach your side of Holmesdale?

Holmesdale is a residential suburb, so our technicians go out to the town and to the areas by it on the same runs: Summerley, Coal Aston, Snape Hill, Holmley Common and Batemoor.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns around Derbyshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about whether our engineers come.

Contact us and check instead of presuming — borders above all, and anywhere your satnav might misread.

This map is the ground this page includes.

Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a rushed morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in the BMW 3 Series feels like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine outside Northfield Junior School, running late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

## Stuck on the roadside around Holmesdale

The opportunity to pull over somewhere suitable does not come to everybody.

A common call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge of Stonelow Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Remain with the motor while it's wise to sit in it, yet clear of the vehicle when it's not.

Do not fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the system.

Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van coming out to an awkward place, and that's no problem for us.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M1 comes into it — under 10 miles from Holmesdale.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't start the car to move it.

Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in the van.

## Holmesdale itself

Holmesdale is a suburban area in Derbyshire, situated approximately 5 miles from Sheffield, and is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock. Holmesdale sits at an elevation of around 147 metres, in a gently rolling landscape of inland Derbyshire. Holmesdale is close to nearby places such as Summerley, Coal Aston, and Snape Hill, and is home to a population of around 2529 residents.

## Once our technicians get to you in Holmesdale: what we do

- The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.

- Our technicians clear that tank of all the tainted mixture.

- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the trouble, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime the system.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running properly.

After that it's ready to pull away.

Long-term damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked the diesel Mercedes E-Class up near St Philip a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off. The short hop really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has arrived at the filter and your pump — which is why our technicians rinse the fuel lines rather than only clearing the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Holmesdale is a different matter

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — do not start the car — yet this issue isn't.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal around Holmesdale has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Holmesdale

We can't put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.

- The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mix goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Kia Sportage that made it by Coal Aston Methodist Church wants its system flushed. Draining isn't the same thing.

## Holmesdale motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Holmesdale, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians work at Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled vehicles, Holmesdale and the rest of Derbyshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
