# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Holmley Common

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Holmley Common and the rest of Derbyshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still inside the tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Just one ring to us will be sufficient: we can tell you what happens from here. Make it first.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Never fire it up — and never trust it if it starts. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just can't run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for a few miles. It is not fine. It's wearing the fuel system while you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage as that advice implies — so don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd rather travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Holmley Lane, put your hazards on then leave it there.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting S18 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Three details determine the entire job: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate volume of it, plus whether it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Plenty of the job begins at the pump, so a large share of that gets completed there.

If you are still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that's typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's consent.

Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the one setting the mistake is stopped.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

The attendants will normally offer to push the vehicle out from the pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our engineers like runs like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now shut off outside Aldi.

## Service near Holmley Common

Snape Hill, Bowshaw, Dronfield, Summerwood Top, Coal Aston — each of these on our trips that take us over to Holmley Common too, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of places across Derbyshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Close to the boundary, or somewhere your satnav struggles with? Contact us to check rather than guessing.

The map marks the patch this page includes.

The lot is ground we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

Twenty to nine. Outside Lenthall Infant and Nursery School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave your motor alone, and phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a dash taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

## Kerbside call-outs around Holmley Common

Not everybody has the chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

A routine call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge on Cecil Road or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Fine there? Stay beside it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Our van driving to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Three replies decide most of the work: what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we get to the car in the car park outside Coach and Horses. Next the polluted mixture comes out of your tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After clean diesel is in and your system bled, we fire it up and check it runs properly before you drive away.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has rolled

Here is where the local M1 comes in — under 10 miles from Holmley Common.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit then switch off.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

## A little about Holmley Common

Holmley Common is a suburban area in Derbyshire, situated near the River Don and close to the city of Sheffield. Holmley Common has a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities, set in a riverside location at an elevation of around 177 metres. Holmley Common is part of the wider Sheffield urban area, with nearby places including Snape Hill, Bowshaw, and Dronfield.

## What our engineers do when we reach you in Holmley Common

- Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- The contaminated fuel is drawn from the tank.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that caused the problem.

- The system gets bled, on new diesel.

- It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running correctly.

After that it's ready to pull away.

Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked near St Pauls. For a diesel BMW 1 Series whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why your lines get cleaned and not just the tank drained.

## Holmley Common AdBlue removal is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — while this problem beneath it's a distinct one altogether.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Holmley Common page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a misfuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Contact Club or anywhere else, and don't restart the car to find a better spot.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Holmley Common?

We cannot put one price on this page frankly, because the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range.

Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Holmley Common

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Holmley Common?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens.

We visit Total and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more frequently than people assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.

Across Derbyshire and around Holmley Common: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
