# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Holmston?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Holmston and the rest of South Ayrshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still in the tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Our technicians can explain what the next step will be. Contact us — that goes before all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Never fire it up — and never depend on it when it runs. That is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel generally just will not run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing out that fuel system as you drive.

- Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Forehill Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd spot suits us better than a started engine.

- Have your position ready before you phone. A postcode starting KA7 3 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and our van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, approximately how many litres, and if the motor has been turned over. Your answers decide everything that comes after.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job usually starts, and where a fair part of that finishes.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's generally where it happens. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

A forecourt is the one location the mistake is halted before the motor has fired.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Very much worth it.

Firing the car for four car lengths? No.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Spar now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

## Holmston and the places beside it

These same runs take us to Masonhill, Castlehill, Old Toll, Forehill and Craigie as well as Holmston, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations in South Ayrshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Near the boundary, or somewhere a satnav struggles with? Call us to ask instead of assuming.

This map shows the patch this page covers.

Your car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. The Skoda Octavia will have felt completely usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor usually won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

## Stranded at the kerbside anywhere around Holmston?

Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere safe.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Allenfield Road because you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Safe right there? Stay with it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

However difficult the place, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

Here is where the local M77 matters, under 15 miles out of Holmston.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never start the car to reposition.

Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

None of it is the engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it is why the normal Overmills Mount call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Peugeot 3008 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it passes through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

## Where's Holmston?

Holmston is a coastal suburban area in South Ayrshire, situated near the towns of Ayr and Prestwick. Holmston sits at an elevation of 22 metres, with views out to the Firth of Clyde. Holmston is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock, which is typical of many Scottish suburban areas. Holmston is close to nearby places such as Masonhill, Castlehill, and Old Toll.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Holmston

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.

- The polluted fuel comes out of that tank.

- Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is left in the system is not what caused the problem.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Your engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

Our engineers do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Rarely the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from close to Wallaces Heel (petrosomatoglyph), is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Audi A3 gets cleared, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines flushed and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not your tank.

## Holmston AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this issue underneath it's a different one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Holmston has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Holmston

What changes the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and we cannot honestly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a technician.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven again before anybody rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now sitting by COILA (2008). Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of a motor giving up. Turn off. Ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Holmston

## I'm on a forecourt in Holmston. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Standing next to it?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout South Ayrshire and in Holmston: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
