# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Holybourne?

Do not turn on the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not been started, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Holybourne and the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Just one ring to us is sufficient: we can explain what follows next. Try it first.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and never believe it when it fires up. Here is the thing drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and drives away quite happily for several miles. It's not okay. It's wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We would sooner travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to deal with than a car that has not moved. On the verge on London Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Before you phone, get your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting GU34 4 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, and also whether the engine has started. These three facts settle the full call-out.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, left at Alton since breakfast? The day has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the drive in that sucked diluted diesel through your pump. Call us before you collect it.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

It kicks off at a pump, generally. Regularly it finishes there as well.

The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's permission, that's a spot our engineers work, and often.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can it be halted with your motor still untouched.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the car is.

The staff will usually help you wheel the car clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Starting the car just to move four car lengths is not.

The enquiry our engineers want goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now shut off at Lidl. What we are actually asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Areas our team reach near Holybourne

Those same journeys bring us to Cuckoos Corner, Neatham, Anstey, Spitalhatch and Wilsom besides Holybourne, which is a village.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations across Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

On a boundary, or anywhere your phone misreads? Call us to ask instead of guessing.

See our map for the patch included on this page.

Your car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a hurried morning run demands plenty — so three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Andrews' Endowed Church of England Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone us.

## Holybourne: stranded wherever you pulled up

Some people find no safe spot to stop whatsoever.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Lower Neatham Mill Lane since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Clear of the vehicle when it isn't wise to be inside, beside it when it is.

Never restart it to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the fuel system.

However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Here is where the M3 comes into it — under 10 miles from Holybourne.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

## A bit about Holybourne

Holybourne is a village situated on the River Wey in Hampshire, with a mix of old and new buildings, including many detached homes. Holybourne sits at an elevation of 103 metres, near the South Downs National Park, and is close to nearby places such as Cuckoos Corner and Neatham. Holybourne has a population of around 923 residents, who enjoy the village's riverside setting and proximity to the city of Winchester, which is 17.3 miles away. Holybourne is also within commuting distance of London, being approximately 42.6 miles from the capital.

## What comes next when our engineers reach you around Holybourne

- We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.

- The polluted fuel is pulled from your tank.

- Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the system isn't what caused the problem.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Why so direct about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it gives off downstream with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Ford Focus by Holy Rood.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Holybourne?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is the same — do not crank it — yet the fault isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Holybourne page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Holybourne pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that blend goes into your filter, into your lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got close to Holybourne Theatre wants its circuit purged. Emptying isn't the same thing.

## Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Holybourne

## Fuel drains on a Holybourne petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's permission our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with the vehicle?

Do not turn the car back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining misfuelled motors, Holybourne and the rest of Hampshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
