# Hopwood: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Stop; leave the car off.

Emptied then rinsed, just where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward depends on the minutes to come more than on everything else.

Anywhere you happen to be in Hopwood, this is the order things run from here.

## Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Work through the following before anything else, in this order.

- Take the keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime your fuel system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the parts it damages, and so keep the vehicle off entirely.

- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mixture.

- Visibility comes first beside moving traffic: switch your hazards on, and only then think about everything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump. Do not crank it to move it, however short the distance.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt replies both, and that is where our first question starts. Never throw it away.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next junction if you're on the M62, under a mile from Hopwood, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Step one comes after that.

## Has it run yet? The fork in every Hopwood fuel drain

What happens after this rests on one answer, and just one.

If it has not once been started:

- The petrol is still inside the tank and nowhere else.

- The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where the vehicle is.

- Step one matters for precisely this reason: it's the best place to be in.

Run at all, even for a second:

- Petrol has been pulled out of the tank, through your filter and into the fuel lines.

- Run it further and that petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through your pump first.

- The farther it went, the bigger this job — the fuel lines, your filter, and sometimes more besides.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that is only waiting in a tank.

The parts that shift it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Hopwood, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

- Where you are. A postcode starting OL10 2 is the best start.

- A road name helps: Green Lane, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Aldi, and it is simple.

- Tell us what the vehicle is — make, model — and check it is diesel.

- Say which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Hopwood.

- How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.

- Whether it has run. And if it has, how far and how hard.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before our technicians arrive is faster than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the car left at home with nowhere to be? Then will do as well.

## While you wait for a fuel drain in Hopwood

The wait is where well-meant help does the harm. Stick to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the car.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of it takes the petrol back out.

- No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- Leave your ignition off — your windows and your radio included.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when the van gets there

- Three questions. What got in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers decide this job, which is why the price comes after them but not before.

- Out of your tank comes the contaminated blend: your tank is emptied.

- Rinsing the fuel lines follows, because a car that ran has petrol past that tank, in your lines themselves.

- Then your filter: swapped where there is a workable one, cleared where there's not.

- Your system is primed on fresh diesel.

- First start on new diesel. When priming is finished, the motor is started and our technicians make sure that it runs properly.

Only once it's running on new diesel do our technicians head off.

It's very rare for a car noticed quickly to be left with lasting damage, and normal use starts again right away.

## Back on the road around Hopwood after the fuel drain

- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it's been started on fresh fuel.

- Pull over and call us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was carried out, and so hold on to the paperwork.

- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
