# Hunslet: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the motor. While the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, all over Hunslet and the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Just one call our way is sufficient: our technicians shall tell you what happens from here. Make that straight away.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: switching it on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those components.

- Never put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, and we would much rather get to an awkward location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Hillidge Road, turn your hazards on then keep it there.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts LS10 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, roughly how much, plus whether your car has been turned over. The responses settle whatever comes after.

Never drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through the high-pressure pump in real volume on the way in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat at Leeds whilst the work gets done, and we would far rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job often starts, and where a fair part of that ends.

The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's permission, that's a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Nowhere else other than a garage can this be caught with your engine still unstarted.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the assistance.

Starting the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Skoda Octavia in Hunslet and you are now stuck outside Aldi with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us. Do not crank it a second time to leave the spot. We will head your way, empty the tank, flush the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle uses very little of it, so those are usually the simple cases.

## Hunslet plus the towns beside it

These same journeys bring us to Hunslet Carr, Atkinson Hill, Pottery Field, Thwaite Gate and Beeston Hill along with Hunslet, which is a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most towns across West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours.

Presuming is the habit to resist, above all on a boundary or somewhere a satnav struggles. Contact us to check.

Check this map for the patch shown here.

All of it is territory we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move the car anywhere.

## Hunslet: broken down where you parked

Not everybody has the chance to stop anywhere safe.

Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside M621, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay by your car or step away from it turns on whether staying there looks safe.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Pressing on causes the car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no bother for us.

Park it there overnight. Ring us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting in the parking area at Station Hotel degrades as it waits, tank of petrol or not, and this job remains a simple one right up till the moment it gets driven home. The query our engineers come with is about the drive there: a cold motor over a short distance is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has travelled

This is where the M621 comes in, under a mile out of Hunslet.

A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

Long run? Anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

## Where's Hunslet?

Hunslet is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the banks of the River Aire, with Hunslet being close to the city centre of Leeds. Hunslet has a mix of terraced housing and local amenities, with Hunslet being near to other areas such as Hunslet Carr and Pottery Field. Hunslet sits at an elevation of around 32 metres above sea level, with Hunslet being part of the larger Leeds urban area.

## What our engineers do when we arrive with you around Hunslet

- The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Our engineers drain that tank of the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- When it's started, we check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked the diesel BMW 5 Series up close to Middleton Railway Museum a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us then leave it off. The short hop truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has reached your filter and your pump — which is why our engineers rinse the lines rather than only clearing your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hunslet is a different job

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — never fire it up — but this problem is not.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.

AdBlue removal in Hunslet has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

## Hunslet prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What shifts the price is listed below, because this job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Purged, not emptied — that is what a diesel Peugeot 208 which got as far as Dewsbury Road Library needs. Running a diesel puts the mix into the filter, the lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Hunslet

## Fuel drains on a Hunslet petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a large share of this work happens.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like JET is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Never switch the engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later on.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Hunslet and throughout West Yorkshire.
