# Hurley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Hurley and the rest of Warwickshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Ring us before all else begins, and you'll see what happens next.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Don't fire it up — and don't believe it if it does start. This is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives off just fine for a few miles. It isn't okay. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: turning it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into just those components.

- Do not add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Dexter Lane? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky location works for us better than a started motor.

- Keep your position prepared before you phone. A postcode starting CV9 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, about how much, and if the engine has been turned over. The responses shape all that follows.

The high-pressure pump did that morning drive labouring on a fluid that had shed a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting outside Wilnecote until the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the thing we put to you is about distance not time. Call us. Leave the car just where it stands.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A good part of the work ends up completed at a pump, as that's where it usually kicks off.

The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Kingsbury Garage? Given the site's consent, that is somewhere our engineers work, and often.

Nowhere other than a garage can it be caught with the engine still untouched.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the lines as well as your tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where your car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Move it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Shifting the car four bays doesn't merit cranking it.

## Areas our team serve near Hurley

Hurley is a rural village, and so our vans go out to it and to the areas by it on the usual trips: Hurley Common, Foul End, Kingsbury, Wood End and Piccadilly.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places around Warwickshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours.

Guessing is the thing to avoid, particularly on the boundary or somewhere the satnav fails. Ring us and ask.

Use this map for the area covered here.

The vehicle does not need to come to us. We work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from Hurley Primary School. They all do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally won't run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing tells you, as from behind the wheel there's nothing to caution you about. Ring us with roughly how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer matters more than the first.

## Roadside stops around Hurley

Not everybody has a sensible place to pull over.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Dexter Court as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Clear of the vehicle while it is not safe to sit inside, with it if it is.

Don't fire up your motor to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system.

However difficult the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Straightforward job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Audi A3 parked at Hollybush with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so park the vehicle then call us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

The local M42 is the one that counts now, and sits under 3 miles from Hurley.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and do not start it to reposition.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It affects what our technicians bring.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That's the whole process, and it explains the normal Hurley Recreation Ground call: a diesel BMW 1 Series that drove out there without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past gaps instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

## A bit about Hurley

Hurley is a village in Warwickshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 95 metres, with Hurley Common nearby. Hurley lies approximately 11 miles from Lichfield and 97 miles from London, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing. Hurley is surrounded by other small settlements, including Foul End and Kingsbury, and has a population of around 1698 residents.

## What follows when our technicians reach you in Hurley

- Our engineers establish what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled out of that tank.

- We clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is left in the fuel system isn't what started the trouble.

- Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- Once it's started, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away.

Our technicians do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hurley is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the issue under it is a different one altogether.

Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

AdBlue removal around Hurley has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later. Then call us about the Mercedes A-Class near Baxterley Church, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and we work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Hurley?

We can't put one number on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Hurley

## Fuel drains on a Hurley petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place.

Often, provided the site agrees: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with your car?

Shut off is the way it remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards.

A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists fear.

Clearing misfilled motors, Hurley and the rest of Warwickshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
