# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Icy Park? Don't Start It

Don't start the engine. If the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Icy Park and the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Contact us and our team shall explain what follows from here before you do much else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And if started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to water down it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd much rather get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Bakers Hill, switch your hazards on then leave it there.

- The van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts TQ7 4, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what went in, approximately how much, and whether your car has been run. The responses shape all that happens next.

Never drive it home. The journey in has already sent a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane, and the trip back would more or less double it for no gain at all. Phone us from the platform if that's simpler. We do not need you hovering over your car outside Ivybridge while our engineers work, and we'd very much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Removing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where the work usually starts, and where a fair portion of it finishes.

If you are still at the forecourt at Asda Express, that's usually where this drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

Before your engine has run — a garage is the one location it gets caught.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key.

Push it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Moving the car four bays does not warrant firing it.

## Icy Park plus the areas next to it

Icy Park is a small village, and so our vans go out to the town and to anywhere near it on the same journeys: Aveton Gifford, Venn, Ashford, Hatch and Churchstow.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all towns around Devon have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Contact us to check rather than assuming.

The patch the page covers is on our map.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers serve, and none of that requires the vehicle to come to us.

You'll be urged to shift the car clear of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. On the zig-zags outside Aveton Gifford CofE Primary School, a misfuelled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond your filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Phone.

## Kerbside stops around Icy Park

Some people have no sensible spot to pull in at all.

A normal call for us instead of a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge on Fore Street or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you stay by the motor or move clear of it turns on whether sitting nearby feels safe.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

A van driving to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

This is what a job in the car park outside Fisherman's Rest typically looks like. Our engineers get to the car, ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three answers settle most of the work. Then the polluted blend comes out of that tank, the lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then we start it, make sure it runs smoothly, and you set off.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 50 miles out of Icy Park, the local M5 is what matters here.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition.

It affects what our engineers bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to South Efford Marsh Nature Reserve, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive it home to buy any.

## Where is Icy Park?

Icy Park is a small locality in Devon, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 34 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Icy Park lies near the cities of Plymouth and the surrounding villages of Aveton Gifford and Venn. Icy Park is located in the South West region of England, approximately 181 miles from London.

## The visit around Icy Park, step by step

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The tainted mixture is drawn from your tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Our engineers pour new diesel in and prime your system.

- Our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That has it ready to set off.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Icy Park

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the fault under it is a different one altogether.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Icy Park page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — by Aveton Gifford Village Hall or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Audi Q5 telling you what is wrong.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Icy Park

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what varies it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

## Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Icy Park

## Fuel drains on a Icy Park petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more often than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Your pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Leave it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists expect.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Icy Park and throughout Devon.
