# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ilmer?

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Ilmer or the rest of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Our team shall explain what your next step is. Contact us — this comes before all else.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and never believe it when it does start. Here is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's wearing out your fuel system as you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so never add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Thame Road? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A tricky place works for us better than a started diesel.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning HP27 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has been started. The replies settle all that comes after.

Never run it home. The journey in has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would close to double it for no purpose at all. Call us from the platform if that's easier. We never need you standing over the vehicle outside Monks Risborough while we work, and we would very much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel at a forecourt?

Much of this work begins at the pump, so a fair part of that is finished at one.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Shell that is usually where this drain happens.

The forecourt is the only setting it is halted before your motor has run.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines along with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians put it right where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

## Ilmer and the places beside it

Ilmer is a rural hamlet, and so our team go out to it and to anywhere near it on the usual journeys: Longwick, Holly Green, Forty Green, Owlswick and Skittle Green.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations across Buckinghamshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Call us and enquire rather than guessing — county lines especially, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.

That map is the area the page spans.

Your car never needs to come to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Longwick Church of England Combined School, running late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, phone us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a hurried morning dash needs plenty.

## Stuck on the kerbside in Ilmer

Not everybody finds a safe place to stop.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge of North Mill Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Clear of your car if it is not safe to wait inside, with it if it is.

Don't restart your engine to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system.

We'll send the van to an inconvenient location without any trouble, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M40 counts, under 10 miles out of Ilmer.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Lockington in that diesel Mercedes E-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.

## A little about Ilmer

Ilmer is a small hamlet in Buckinghamshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 85 metres. Ilmer lies near the villages of Longwick and Forty Green, and is close to the Oxfordshire border. Ilmer is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Ilmer is also within commuting distance of Oxford, which is approximately 16 miles away.

## What happens when our technicians get to you in Ilmer

- The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- The tainted fuel is pulled from your tank.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ilmer

The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around Ilmer has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfuelled Citroen C3, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Lockington, and leave the restarting alone.

## Ilmer pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the figure is set out below, because this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Where the car is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle then put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Volvo XC60 by Coldharbour and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the problem: there is petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is draw it back through the pump a second time. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The circuit gets cleaned, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that just starts.

## Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Ilmer

## Fuel drains on a Ilmer petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good part of this work takes place.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our engineers visit Gulf and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and your car, still together?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining around Ilmer and across Buckinghamshire.
