# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Inglemire: What Happens Now

Stop, and leave your engine off — not on, and not for a moment to move it.

Drained then cleaned, right where it is: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes ahead more than on anything else.

Anywhere you happen to be in Inglemire, this is how things run from now.

## Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

In this order, and before anything else:

- Bleeding the fuel system draws petrol from the tank towards the parts it damages, and switching your ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys come out, and your ignition stays off completely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it only leaves you with more of the same mixture.

- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.

- By hand, never on the motor: that is how it leaves the pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you roll, however short the distance.

- Hold on to your receipt. It says which fuel went in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you're on the M62, under 15 miles from Inglemire, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services farther on. Stage one comes after that.

## Each Inglemire fuel drain starts here: has your engine run?

One answer is what everything after this stage rests on.

If your motor has not run at all:

- All the petrol remains inside that tank, and just there.

- Where your car stands is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- Being here is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

If it has been started, even for a second:

- Your lines and your filter already hold petrol drawn out of the tank.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors get it on a longer run.

- Mileage is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and the injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

Petrol sitting in a tank damages nothing.

Pump that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Inglemire: what to have ready

Get ready a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode starting HU6 8 serves best.

- A road name is a help: Cottingham Grove, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.

- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, so mention the landmark — like the one outside Heron Foods.

- Say what the vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.

- What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for Inglemire, and so tell us which.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- Whether it has run. And if it has, how far and how hard.

- Settle who owns your car ahead of when our engineers turn up: some hire and company contracts want the owner to approve the work, and that is faster beforehand.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do too.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Inglemire

Help, however well meant, is what does the damage while you wait. So stick to these.

- Wait with the car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- A kind passer-by doesn't start it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or moving it a few yards.

- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.

- No home-made emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has by now gone beyond the tank.

- Even your radio or your windows aren't worth turning the ignition on for.

## When our van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and whether it's run. The replies decide this job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.

- Your tank is emptied. The polluted mixture comes from your tank.

- If it ran, the fuel lines are holding petrol that has moved beyond your tank — so they're rinsed.

- The filter is dealt with. Cleared, or replaced where the car has a workable one.

- The system is primed on clean diesel.

- The start. With fresh diesel in and your system primed, it's fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly.

Only once it is running on clean diesel do our technicians leave.

If it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare, and the car goes back to normal driving at once.

## After your fuel drain is done: driving in Inglemire a second time

- Once it has been started on clean fuel, there's nothing unusual to do: drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and call us back.

- Your paperwork answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- Check the label on the pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
