# Inishrush: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, across Inishrush and the remainder of County Londonderry, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Call us so our technicians can explain what comes next before you do any more.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We'd much rather travel to an odd place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to sort than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on B842, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts BT44 8 — that's what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how many litres, and whether the engine has started. Those three replies decide your whole job.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through that high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the road in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Tiguan outside the nearest station whilst the work happens, and we would far rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A large share of this job ends up finished at a pump, as that is where it often begins.

If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is generally where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement.

At a forecourt, it is spotted with the engine never started, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key determine how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.

The staff will usually offer to move it out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

The complicated part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that decides if a technician can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at the local shops, tell us how much space there's around you and which way round the car is. Those our engineers cover often. Should there be no space to work next to the diesel Audi A4, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have quietly made a harder job of what was just a vehicle sitting still.

## Inishrush plus the villages near it

Inishrush is a small village, and so our vans are out to the town and to the places near it on those same rounds: Clady, Glenone, Portglenone, Tamlaght and Culnady.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns in County Londonderry, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours.

Assuming is the mistake to skip, especially on a boundary or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Contact us to ask.

That map shows the area the page covers.

The vehicle never needs to come to us. We work throughout all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

You'll be told to shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a misfuelled Mercedes E-Class running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol past your filter on to the pump. Let them grumble. Call us.

## Roadside stops across Inishrush

The opportunity to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everyone.

If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge on Dunaverty Court, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us rather than an odd one.

Whether you stay beside the car or keep away from it hangs on whether being there seems wise.

Never restart it to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the system.

Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no trouble for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved

Here is where your M77 matters, over 50 miles out of Inishrush.

A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are generally a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the next safe exit and switch off.

On a longer run — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what our technicians bring.

## Where is Inishrush?

Inishrush is a small locality in County Londonderry, situated inland at an elevation of 32 metres. Inishrush lies near the villages of Clady, Glenone, and Portglenone, and is approximately 30 miles from Belfast. Inishrush is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Inishrush is a relatively small community, with a population of around 665 people.

## What comes next when our engineers arrive with you in Inishrush

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses alter what the work really is.

- Our engineers empty your tank of all the polluted fuel.

- What is left in your system should not be what created the trouble, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our engineers do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left near the centre. For a diesel Peugeot 208 whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get purged and not just that tank emptied.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Inishrush

The issue is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Inishrush page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Inishrush?

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail: that is where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with the tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that made it close to the far end of the built-up part needs the system purged rather than drained.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Inishrush motorists

## I'm on a forecourt around Inishrush. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done.

Our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the vehicle off.

Driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more often than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with the car?

Keep it switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying wrongly fuelled vehicles, Inishrush and the rest of County Londonderry, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
