# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Inshes

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Inshes and the rest of Highland. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the engine has not been started and the fuel is still inside the tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Ring us and our technicians can show you what follows from here before you do anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start it. And if started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Turning the ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.

- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Cauldfield Road South? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky location suits us better than a started motor.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts IV2 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has started. Those three details determine the whole job.

## Draining petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

The work kicks off at the pump, typically. Regularly it finishes at one too.

Still at Highland Fuels? Then that is normally where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

No place other than a garage can the mistake be halted with your motor still unstarted.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we deal with it where your car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Push the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that is worth doing.

Shifting it four lengths doesn't warrant cranking it.

Every start primes that fuel system and sucks more of that mixture out of that tank and on to your pump — which is why a motor moved twice into a nicer bay has quietly become a bigger job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where we can't work next to the diesel Audi A4, we move it without running it. None of that is fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Aldi we attend all the time, and the fuel is rarely the difficult part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar at the way in determining whether a van can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the car points.

## Areas our vans serve near Inshes

Inshes is a residential suburb, and we get out to it and to the places by it on the usual runs: Easter Muckovie, Resaurie, Westhill, Raigmore and Woodside of Culloden.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations around Highland, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours.

Contact us to check instead of presuming, above all where you are on the boundary or somewhere your satnav gets wrong.

The area the page includes is on this map.

All of that is ground our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

Somebody will urge you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a nuisance; the same motor started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through the filter then into your pump. Leave it, let them moan, then give us a call.

## Stranded by the kerbside anywhere in Inshes?

The chance to pull over somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Inshes Brae since you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Wait by the motor while it is safe to wait inside, and clear of it if it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

However awkward the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

Three replies settle most of the work: what went in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the vehicle in the car park by Brewers Fayre. Then the polluted mixture comes out of the tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your BMW 1 Series has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When new diesel is in and your system primed, we fire it up and check it runs correctly before you set off.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

The local M90 is the road that matters now, and sits over 50 miles from Inshes.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Never start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible exit then switch off.

Long run? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

## A little about Inshes

Inshes is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Inverness, situated near the Moray Firth coast in the Scottish Highlands. Inshes sits at an elevation of 66 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Inshes is close to nearby places such as Easter Muckovie, Resaurie, and Westhill, and is approximately 2.4 miles from Inverness city centre. Inshes has a population of around 2590 residents.

## What our engineers do when our technicians get to you around Inshes

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work really is.

- Away flows the tainted mixture.

- Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what's remaining in your system isn't what caused the issue.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Our technicians flush the fuel lines instead of only clearing the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to your filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop truly helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Kia Sportage parked up near Vue a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Inshes is a distinct job

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — do not start it — but the issue is not.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Inshes page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a lumpy idle, knocking: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what is wrong. Do not start it to find a better place — turn off where you have stopped, by Inshes Church or anywhere else.

## Inshes pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

We can't put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

## Inshes drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Inshes?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep it switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the car stay that way.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining in Inshes and throughout Highland — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
